Pete Vukovich, 4-2, allowed one run and eight hits in seven innings of work in winning his fourth consecutive decision. Jamie Easterly finished as the Brewers stretched their winning streak to six games. The Twins have dropped eight ina row. MILWAUKEE TOOK a 1-0 lead off Minnesota starter Pete Redfern, 3-4, in the second inning. Thomas drew a leadoff walk, went to third on Ben Oglivie's single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ted Simmons. Milwaukee hiked the lead to 6-0 and chased Redfern with five runs in the third. Jim Gantner led off with a walk and one out later Cecil Cooper singled. Thomas then belted the first of his two homers over the left field wall. Ogilvie followed with a single that kayoed Redfern. Darrell Jackson came in and walked the first two batters he faced to load the bases and then gave up an RBI single to Mark Brouhard. John Verhoeven relieved and allowed a sacrifice fly by Ed Romero. Thomas followed a single by Cooper in the seventh with his second homer. MInnesota scored in the sixth when Roy Smalley doubled, advanced to third on a single by Butch Wynegar and came home on a grounder by John Castino and Gary Ward's sacrifice fly produced a run in the ninth. Durham singled and stole second in the fourth but was stranded. Durham also singled in the eighth, sending Buckner, who beat out a bunt, to third. Buckner scored on a sacrifice fly by Henderson. LOUIS (AP) - Rookie John Mar- tin fired a four-hitter in his sixth major league start, and the St. Louis Car- dinals converted four hits and two Houston errors into a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros yesterday. Martin, 4-0, a 25-year-old lefthander who started the season in the minors, outdueled Houston's Nolan Ryan, who left after 62/3 innings. Ryan, 3-2, yielded three of the five St. Louis hits and set down 14 batters in a row after the Car- dinals scored twice in the first. ST. LOUIS wasted Garry Tem- pleton's leadoff single when he was caught stealing. But after Tony Scott flied out, Keith Fernandez drew one of Ryan's three walks and went to third on George Hendrick's single. Dane Iorg delivered an RBI single and after second baseman Rafael Landestey booted Ken Oberkfell's grounder for an error, Hendrick scored on a wild pitch. Dave Roberts' homer in the seventh spoiled the shutout bid by Martin, who walked two and struck out one. But St. Louis added a run in the bot- tom of the seventh on third baseman Roberts' throwing error on Tom Herr's grounder, a stolen base and Tem- pleton's single. Aside from Roberts' homer, the only Houston runner to advance beyond second base was Terry Puhl. He singled with two out in the third inning, stole second and continued to third on a throwing error by catcher Orlando Sanchez but Kiko Garcia flied out. Houston's Art Howe extended his hit- ting streak to 20 games with a second- inning single. Major League Standings NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST W L Pct. GB W L Pct.
