Contacts: an option millions look into (Continued from Page 15) lenses. Furthermore, they work well for people with astigmatism (difficulty in focusing). However, hard lenses have a greater tendency to "pop out," and they take longer to adjust to. Once adapted to, they can only be worn for about 12 hours a day since it is harder for oxygen to permeate the hard lens. Soft lenses are the most popular lens. Their main selling point is comfort because they do not irritate the cornea of the eyelid as much as hard lenses. They are a more "natural" lens because it is easier for the cornea to "breathe." Most people adjust to soft lenses within a few days-as opposed to two weeks for hard lenses-and they can be worn up to 18 hours a day. Soft lenses, too, have their drawbacks; they are more expensive than hard lenses; they are more fragile and scratch more easily; their care is more time- consuming. As far as wearers are con- cerned, though, the comfort of a soft lens offsets these disadvantages. A fourth variety of lens is the gas- permeable lens. Ann Toureau of the Detroit Optometric Center calls them "a very good alternative for people who have had trouble with both hard lenses and soft lenses." These lenses are more akin to hard lenses, but are easier on the eyes. Contrary to popular opinion, gas-permeable lenses do not have little pinholes in them. Instead, their molecular structure allows some oxygen to pass through them. Gas- permeable lenses are made of a more flexible material than soft lenses and their costs, both initially and for the ex- tra care they require, are more than for, other lenses. Uslan says that their main value lies in the fact that they are a "specialty lens," but he cautions that they are "not a cure-all." Some of the reasons people are con- verting to contacts are, according to Toureau, "comfort, convenience, and lifestyle." Many students choose to wear contacts because they are vir- tually, invisible. Contacts offer more natural vision ,because the wearer is always looking through the center of the lens. Glasses, on the other hand, have a tendency to fog up, they fall off more readily, and their frames can hinder peripheral vision. Contact lenses also help severely nearsighted people, or people with scarred or deformed corneas, by distorting less than glasses. be Midhigan BhiIQ I Student Newspaper at The University of Michigan IFE ------------ WRITE YOUR AD HERE! ----------- S- - - 1 - L-----------.CLIP AND MAIL TODAY!------------I USE THIS HANDY CHART TO QUICKLY ARRIVE AT AD COST Words 1 2 3 4 5 add. 0-14 1.70 3.40 4.60 5.80 7.00 1.00 1 Plew'e indicate 15-21 2.55 5.10 6.90 8.70 10.50 1.50 wherethisad 22-28 3.40 6.80 9.20 11.60 14.00 2.00 orren for sale 29-35 4.25 8.50 11.50 14.50 17.50 2.50 help wanted 36-42 5.10 10.20 13.80 17.40 21.00 3.00 roomma 43-49 6.80 11.90 16.10 20.30 24.50 3.50 7 words per fine (Each line of space used counts as 7 words).
