Pope improves;
investigation

continue
From APandUPI
ROME - Pope John Paul II was
listed in "vastly improved" condition
yesterday, sipping tea for breakfast,
doing light physical exercises and
resuming Vatican business for the first
time since a terrorist shot and wounded
him last week.
The encouraging medical reports
came as Italian news reports said the
pope's assailant, Mehmet Ali Agca, told
investigators he had planned to kill
England's Queen Elizabeth and U.N.
Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim and
that he shot John Paul to defend his
Moslem faith.
SOURCES REPORTED Agca said he
was a Moslem and that he refuses to eat
pork or drink alcohol, in .accordance
with Moslem law. Police sources said
he told them he wanted to kill the pope

The Italian news agency ANSA
quoted Agca as telling his chief in-

consider him responsible for the reac-

POLICE OFFICIALLY reported lit-
tle progress in their interrogation of
Agca. They said, however, that there is
a "fifty-fifty" chance that Agca was
supported by Turkish right-wing
groups, acting either in Turkey or
abroad, and that someone may have
hired him to kill the pope, a source said.
Investigation sources said Agca was
still trying to put the inquiry off track
by either refusing to answer questions
or by inventing false replies.

West Quad building
director dismissed

(Continued from Page 3)
people in administration perceive you
are the right material, he said, adding
that neither occurred in his case.
In the past 13 years "I have felt like I
made a difference" as building direc-
tor, said West, and that feeling was the
best part of the job.
A dormitory building director should
be willing to tolerate more things than
most people, because "no matter how
hard you try, someone always will say
it is wrong," said West, adding that a
"thick skin" is necessary, but
* flexibility is also needed.

WEST MOVED INTO West Quad as
building director from Texas Tech
University in 1968. "I came in at the
height of the 60s protests," he said, ad-
ding that students have not changed
much since then.
"This is basically a conservative
campus," West said, and they were,
conservative in the 60s too, but with
more "screamers" than there are now.
West, 54, said he is unsure of his
future after he leaves the University.

Fazio filed a report for this story.
