fourth of the year.
THE LEAD WAS quickly erased,
how .er, as Ranger first baseman Pat
Putnam responded'with a blast of his
own, a solo shot with one out in the
second.
Texas then erupted for three runs in
the third, sending nine men to the plate
and chasing Tiger starter Dan Petry
from the mound. Mario Mendoza star-
ted the uprising with a single. He
moved to second when Bump Wills
walked and scored when Tiger second
baseman Lou Whitaker failed to handle
Mickey Rivers' high chopper. Wills
crossed the plate when Al Oliver groun-
ded into a double play. The third run
scored on consecutive singles by Buddy
Bell, Johnny Grubb, and Putnam, with
Putnam's base hit coming off of Detroit
reliever Dave Tobik. ,
The Tigers got two runs back in the
bottom of the inning, even though they
could only muster one hit off of Ranger
pitcher Jon Matlack. A walk to
Whitaker, an error by Putnam on
Rickie Peters' grounder, and a Kemp
single produced the first run. Peters
scored on a sacrifice fly by John
Wockenfuss.
THE ROOF FELL IN on the Tigers in
the sixth as Texas tagged three Bengal
pitchers for seven runs.
Aurelio Lopez absorbed much of the
onslaught. In fact, most of Senor
Smoke's wounds were self-inflicted. I
