Page 14-Saturday, May 16, 1981-The Michigan Daily The Preakness I Second BALTIMORE (AP) - Pleasant Colony, who won the most crowded Kentucky Derby since 1974, will try and overcome a lot of traffic again today in the $200,000-added Preakness at Pimlico. Trainer John Campo is confident of another victory for the colt who beat 20 3-year-olds, finishing three-quarters of a length ahead of Woodchopper, in the biggest Derby field since 23 ran in 1974 when Cannonade won. In the 1 3/16-mile Preakness, Pleasant Colony wil meet 13 rivals. It will be the biggest field since Per- sonality won the 14-horse 1970 running. In the Derby, Pleasant Colony broke from the No.7 position and stayed out of trouble until working his way into con- tention on the final turn. jewelof they - Pleasant Colony and Flying Nashua - moved together," said Larry Barrera, Flying Nashua's trainer. Then Velasquez took the inside and Angel Cordero Jr. chose the outside with Flying Nashua. "It turned out inside was the place to be," said Barrera. Flying Nashua will start from the No. 5 post in the Preakness, while Pleasant Colony will break from the No. 13 hole. BUT THERE WERE indications that Pass the Tab, who is trained by Barrera's brother Albert, would not go to the post at 5:38 p.m. EDT, for the 106th Preakness, to be televised by-ABC from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Joining Paristo and Highland Blade in the field as newcomers to Triple Crown competition will be A Run, Bare Knuckles, Thirty Eight Paces and Escambia Pay. ILLINOIS DERBY winner Paristo was not originally nominated for the Preakness and was made a supplemen- tal nominee for $10,000. A Run will be coupled in the betting with Flying Nashua as a Larry Barrera-trained en- try. Top Avenger and Escambia Bay are coupled as the mutuel field because Crown at stake there can be only 12 separate betting in- terests. With 14 starters, each carrying 126 pounds, the race will be worth a Preakness record $271,800, with a record $201,800 to the winner. Should Pass the Tab be scratched, the gross purse and winner's share would be $270,800 and $200,800, respectively. Jack Van Berg, trainer of Bold Ego, said he expected A Run, third in the May 9 Withers at Belmont Park, and Thirty Eight Paces, winner of a division of the Woodlawn on the grass at Pimlico May 2, to go for the lead. 4 T'he Phreakness Field P.P.
