CINEMA GUILD Survivors found after island volcano erupts 0 Milliken- .. .pushing Proposal A HONOLULU (AP)-Some 30 residen- ts of a remote Northern Marianas island were sighted at daybreak today standing on the beach after a volcanic eruption that sent lava streaming toward their village, the Coast Guard said, The island's 54 villagers had not been heard from since one of two volcanoes on the tiny island of Pagan, 350 miles north of Guam, erupted Thursday, belching ash 40,000 feet into the air, in its first eruption in 26 years. There was no word on the rest of the island's population. THE SIGHTING of the villagers was reported by a Japanese cargo ship, the Hoyo Maru, which had detoured to the island after the eruption, the Coast Guard's search and rescue office on Guam said. The ship reported it was sending small boats to pick up the islanders. The volcano's activity was weaker today with nq sign of a lava flow, the HoyoMaru said. A second ship, the Trust Territory vessel Kaselehia, was expected to arrive at Pagan today. It had been enroute to Saipan, capital of the Nor- thern Marianas. Before the Hoyo Maru's arrival, the island had been hidden beneath a blanket of smoke. "WE COULDN'T see much of anything," said Lt. Sandy Stairs, a Navy public affairs officer who flew over the island before Hoyo Maru's arrival. "It was like being fogbound." Some authorities had believed the residents-most of them farmers and fisherman-may have fled to caves, as they do during typhoons,. for refuge from the heat and fiery molten rock. A Coast Guard C-130 rescue plane was sent from Guam, and the rescue vessel Fentress was en route from Saipan and expected to arrive later today. I 0 Ki :BARGAIN MATINEES WED. SAT. SUN.
