The Michigan Daily-Saturday, May 16, 1981-Page 5 Reagan advisers expected to compromise on tax ct WASHINGTON (UPI)-The White House yesterday opened the door to compromise on President Reagan's three-year cut in tax rates-a proposal that Republican House leader Bob, Michel says does not have the votes to win. "We have always said we are willing to listen," Speakes said. HE SAID REAGAN still believes his proposed 10 percent cut in individual tax rates for each of three years is the best plan. But Speakes' remarks in- dicated a softening of the earlier presidential statement, "This is no time to compromise." An administration official said the president is still adamant in keeping a multi-year proposal rather than the one-year tax plan proposed by Democrats. But the official said today there is room for bargaining on other specifics of the tax rate reduction proposal. The overall size of the tax cut for in- dividuals and businesses-which the administration projected at $54 billion for fiscal 1982-is negotiable, ad- ministration sources said. Auto leaders- unimpressed (Continued from Page 3) Facing a campaign for mandatory auto import restrictions in Congress, the Japanese agreed last month to a two-year limit on the number of cars it sends to the United States, at 1.68 million a year. The Reagan administration praised the decision, and the push for more stringent restrictions dissipated in Congress. Last year Japan sent nearly 2 million vehicles to the United States, excluding trucks. But the Japanese calculated their rollback not from that figure, but from the roughly 1.82 million cars that came directly to the United States. About 170,000 vehicles were not affected because they were sent through Puerto Rico or were classified as wagons or vans. David McCammon, vice president for corporate strategy at Ford Motor Co., which has vigorously pushed for import restrictions, acknowledged the impact of the Japanese reduction "will be relatively minor" on the industry's recovery efforts. If car sales drag, the demand for Japanese cars will be reduced, plenty of Japanese cars will be available, and buyers will not be particularly en- couraged to turn to the U.S. industry. Psalm 2:1 and Acts 4:25 "MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDETH OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD." This passage quoted from the New Testament, Isthe first recorded words spoken by Christ after His baptism by John The Baptist, and The Spirit of God was seen descending upon Him in the form of a Dove. Surely the Creator of Life, The Preserver of Life, and The Redeemer of Life is qualified to tell us what is necessary for life and warn us against the wiles of the Destroyer of Life, Satan, The Devil! Here Christ was speaking to the Devil who was tempting Him to disobey God! Doubtless one of the greatest causes of the "curse and confusion" upon us and the world today Is due to those who call themselves Christian but have utterly failed in making a reasonable effort to get familiar - note, we did not say understand every word - with the entire Bible. "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." May we suggest that the young, the middle-age, and the old even if you are "seventy-eleven and more," begin at Genesis 1:1 and read some every day, praying and looking to God to "touch your heart" and shine His Light into it by His inspired Word. Aim at seeing how much of "every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" you can get familiar with before Mr. Undertaker "calls for your carcass!" There is no telling how much sincere action like this might affect your Eternity, and that of others. Christ said "To him that hath shall be given, but to him that hath not shall be taken away that which he seemeth to have." Lack of use in the long run results in lack of possession. From Ecclesiastes: "And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is weariness of the flesh. LET US HEAR THE CONCLUSION OF THE WHOLE MATTER: FEAR GOD AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS: FOR THIS IS THE WHOLE DUTY OF MAN. FOR GOD SHALL BRING EVERY WORK INTO JUDGEMENT, WITH EVERY SECRET THING, WHETHER IT BE GOOD, OR WHETHER IT BE EVIL." P.O. BOX 405 DECATUR, GEORGIA 30031
