DETROIT-Rickey Peters' dramatic
run-scoring single with the bases
loaded in the bottom of the ninth lifted
the Detroit Tigers to a 1-0 victory over
the Seattle Mariners last night at Tiger
Stadium. Peters' heroics preserved
starter Dan Petry's impressive three-
hit shutout and capped a game in which
numerous scoring chances were throt-
tled by silent bats or outstanding defen-
se.
With no outs in the Tiger ninth,
Champ Summers, who batted for Tom
Brookens, walked. Kirk Gibson was
then sent in to pinch run for Summers.
Gibson promptly stole second. Hebner
was walked intentionally to put Tigers
on first and second. Both runners ad-
vanced on a Lynn Jones sacrifice
grounder to former Tiger pitcher Dick
Drago, who had replaced starter Bryan
Clark. Peters then singled home Gibson
with the game's only run.
The game was scoreless through the
first seven innings with Seattle moun-
ting the most serious scoring threat of
the contest in the top of the eighth. With
nobody out, Bruce Bochte walked and
went to third on a Dan Meyer single to
right. Dave Edler then bounced to Lou
Whitaker at second, who elected to
throw Bochte out at home. Then with
men on first and second, Jerry Narron
fouled out and Jim Anderson bounced
out to Mick Kelleher.
THE TIGERS' FIRST threat to score
came in the bottom of the fourth. With

HOUSTON (AP)-A needle from
Houston center Moses Malone has in-
jected new life into the Boston Celtics,
shaking them from their lethargy and
sparking them to within one victory of
the National Basketball Association
championship.
And tonight, in Game 6 of the best-of-
seven playoff finals which they lead 3-2,
the Celtics will try to wrap up their 14th
NBA title and end the Rockets hopes of
becoming the first team with a losing
record in the regular season to wear an
NBA crown.
Malone's brash comments after
Houston's 91-86 victory in Game 4 Sun-
day, that the Celtics were not all that
good and that.he could take four guys
off the streets of his hometown of
Petersburg, Va. and beat Boston, have
become the cause celebre of this cham-
pionship series, adding zest to what had
Wbeen a rather dull playoff.

two out, John Wockenfuss walked and
went to second when Al Cowens singled
to left. But Tom Brookens struck out to
end the inning.
While few bats were booming for
either team, Tiger starter Dan Petry's
quick reflexes stifled three potential
Mariner scoring chances; the most
serious coming in the top of the sixth
inning. Petry speared a line shot off the
bat of Lenny Randle with Narron on fir-
st and one out. Petry then threw to first
to double up Narron and end the inning.
Detroit started another threat in its
half of the sixth with one out. Steve
Kemp and Wockenfuss singled, then
Cowens forced Wockenfuss at second.
But Brookens fanned, to end the inning
once again.
SEATTLE ALMOST broke the
scoreless stalemate in the top of the
ninth when lead-off batter Randle faked
a bunt, punched the ball past Brookens
at third, and scampered all the way to
second base.
Joe Simpson then flied out to center
and Tom Paciorek flied to right. Richie
Zisk walked, but outfielder Gary Gray,
batting for Dave Henderson, flied out,
stranding Randell at second.
The victory raised Petry's record to
1-2 and dropped rookie Clark's record to
2-1. The win elevated the Tigers' record
to 14-16 and was their second straight
victory over the Mariners. Detroit will
try to sweep its series with Seattle
tonight when the two teams meet at
Tiger Stadium at 8p.m.
