The Michigan Daily-Thursday, May 14, 1981-Page 19 MAJOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP Oakland edges anks, 5-4 NEW YORK (AP)-Unbeaten Matt Keough held New York to one hit over the first seven innings while Dave McKay drove in two runs and Cliff Johnson homered as the Oakland A's held on to edge the New York Yankees 5-4 last night. Keough, 6-0, held the Yankees hitless until Willie Randolph ripped a one-out double to right-center on a 1-0 pitch in the sixth inning. The Oakland right- hander was kayoed in the eighth when the Yankees scored four times on Bucky Dent's single, doubles by Bobby Murcer and Dave Winfield and Reggie Jackson's 414th career homer and four- th this season. THE LAST three hits came with two out and brought on Bob Owchinko, who recorded his second save and the fifth for the A's relief corps. Dave McKay drove in his two runs with a double and a sacrifice, fly and Cliff Johnson walloped his seventh homer of the season against Tommy John, 4-3. The A's eked out a run without a hit in the first inning. Dwayne Murphy walked, advanced to third on an infield out and a wild pitch and scored when John balked on an attempted pickoff. MIKE HEATH, who had three hits, opened the Oakland second with a single and scored on McKay's two-out double. In the fourth, singles by Heath, Shooty Babitt and Fred Stanely made it 3-0. Johnson opened the fifth with his homer and the A's added what turned out to be the winning run on a bunt single by Tony Armas, Heath's sacrifice, two walks-one inten- tional-and McKay's sacrifice fly. Astros 3, Cards o HOUSTON (AP)-Don Sutton gained his first-shutout in a Houston uniform with a five-hitter and Art Howe slugged his third home run of the season to lead the Astros past the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 last night. Sutton, obtained by the Astros as a free agent before the season, raised his record to 3-4, striking out four and walking one. The former Los Angeles Dodger retired 12 consecutive batters over one stretch on route to his first complete game for Houston. The Cardinals managed only six baserunners and none reached second until the eighth inning. Red Sox 5, Twins 2 BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) - Carl Yastrzemski's first home run of the season, a three-run shot in the third in- ning, paced the Boston Red Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins last night behind the combined seven-hit pitching of Mike Torrez and Mark Clear. The 41-year-old Yastrzemski, whose batting average has been under .200 all season, just cleared the wall in the right field corner with his 420th career homer after Jerry Remy and Dwight Evans singled with one out off Twins starter Fernando Arroyo, 2-2. JIM RICE DOUBLED and Tony Perez singled on the next two pitches, with Rice scoring an infield out by Car- ney Lansford to give the Red Sox a 4-0 lead. In the seventh, Yastrzemski walked with one out and scored on a double by Perez, chasing Arroyo. Torrez, 3-2, was unable to get out of the first inning in a May 3 start against Minnesota but allowed only three hits over the first five innings this time. The victory, Boston's seventh in nine games, also was the Red Sox's first in sixth meetings with Minnesota this year. Orioles 4, Jars 0 TORONTO (AP) - Scott McGregor hurled a three-hit shutout and John Lowenstein drove in two runs with his first homer of the season, as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-0 last night. McGregor, 3-1, was touched for singles by Ken Macha, Jorge Bell and Buck Martinez as he recorded his first shutout and second complete game of the season. He had a career-high nine strikeouts and walked two while allowing just one runner to reach third base. THE ORIOLES GOT a run off Mark Bomback, 3-3, in the second when Eddie Murray singled, went to third on Terry Crowley's double and scored on Lowen- stein's fly. Reds 8, Cubs 3 CINCINNATI (AP) - George Foster drove in three runs with a homer and a sacrifice fly and Tom Seaver hurled a five-hitter last night as the Cincinatti Reds pounded the Chicago Cubs, 8-3. Foster slugged a two-run homer, his seventh, of the year, off starter Mike Krukow, 1-3, as the Reds unleashed a 15-hit assault on five Chicago pitchers. SEAVER, 4-1, gained his 249th career victory and moved within two of Bob Gibson, 30th on the all-time list. Krukow surrendered a run in the second on a pair of singles and Ron Oester's RBI grounder.
