Sports Page 16 Wednesday, May 13, 1981 The Michigan Daily Blue nine split inale with WSU 4 4 By MARTHA CRALL The games actually didn't mean much in Michigan's overall season. The Wolverines had already clinched the Big Ten East Division title. In fact, the players appeared to be looking past Wayne State to the Big Ten playoffs this weekend. The result was a split of their doubleheader with the Tarters yester- day at Fisher Stadium - a victory in the opener, 5-3, and a defeat in the nightcap by the same score. A FIVE-RUN sixth inning won the first game for the Wolverines. Batting leader Jim Paciorek (.362) led off the inning with a single, Gerry Hool walked and freshman sensation Chris Sabo singled to load the bases. First baseman Tim Miller then hit what looked to be a sure doubleplay ball to shortstop Fred Darin, who threw to Joe Paglino at second for the force. Paglino proceeded to sail the ball by the first baseman, scoring Paciorek and Hool and landing Miller on second. Tony Evans followed with an RBI double and Rich Bair popped up to the first baseman, Dan Dempsey, who dropped the routine fly ball for an error. With two outs, center fielder Greg Schulte singled in the two runs. Wayne State collected its runs one at a time, starting in the first inning with a single, a stolen base and a force out off the bat of Tim McCamant which drove in a run. McCamant drove in the second Tartar run as well, with a double following a Dave Croskey triple in the third inning. The Tartars scratched out another run in the sixth with a hit batsman, a stolen base, and an error on shortstop Tony Evans. MICHIGAN'S THIRD reliever, Bill Shuta (5-1) picked up the win while going one and one-third of an inning and giving up only one hit, one walk, and one (unearned) run. Wayne State star- ter, Bob Kasprzyk, took the loss in going five and two-thirds innings, giving up all five Michigan runs, two earned, seven hits and three walks while striking out six. The Tarters started off the second game with a first-inning run on a Croskey single, a walk, a force out, an- other walk and an RBI single by Dan Hall. The Wolverines jumped ahead in their half of the stanza, however, with a three-run burst. Schulte, Randy Wroten and Paciorek all singled to lead off the inning, with Paciorek getting an RBI. Then the Tartars again displayed their fielding ineptitude; this time the third baseman threw away Hool's grounder, sending home another run. Evans lof- ted a sacrifice fly to drive in the final tally. WAYNE STATE SCORED a run in the fourth on a Don McArthur double and an RBI single by Chris Stankovich. The fifth inning sealed Michigan's doom as Rick Korkizko led off with a walk, knocking reliever Dave Kopf off the mound. Steve Ontiveros came in and gave up a two-run homer to Mark Limback. The Tarters scored one more run in the sixth inning to make the final 5-3.
