Trackers By JOHN FITZPATRICK Michigan trackster Mike Shea was still out of breath as he walked along the infield of the track, head bowed. A few friends called out to him, causing Shea to look up, smile wanly, and say "An experiment. It failed miserably." Shea's "experiment" was his strategy in the 800 meter run at the Chicago Track Club Open hosted by Michigan last Saturday. Running with seemingly wild abandon, Shea had taken the 800 field through the first lap of the two-lap race in a blazing 52.6 ' seconds in an attempt to burn out his pursuers. Mike White of MSU had something left, though, and he struggled past Shea just before the finish, winning by .02 seconds in 1:50.98. A NUMBER OF teams participated in the meet, with the Wolverines, Eastern Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, and the University of Chicago Track Club all having con- tingents present. Michigan, MSU, and Northwestern used it as a tune-up for the Big Ten Championships to be held next weekend in East Lansing. Spectators at the open were treated to a number of exciting races and quality performances. Dan Heikkinen, who used up his eligibility as a Wolverine runner last winter, legged a strong race in the 3,000-meter steeple chase, which he won in 8:40.91, a new track record. Heikkinen looked very fit as he smoothly strode through the seven-lap race in a solo effort, his nearest com- petitor finishing almost 200 meters behind. Illini senate rej eets sanetions URBANA, Ill. (AP)-The integrity of the University of Illinois is more impor- tant than its membership in the Big Ten, and the university should reject... the penalty imposed by the conference, the faculty-student senate said yester- day. The resolution was approved by the Urbana campus governing body as university President Stanley Ikenberry and Chancellor John Cribbet prepared to meet with Big Ten officials at Bloomington, Ind. today. DISCUSSIONS WILL center on the three years of athletic probation im posed on Illinois because of its handling of the controversial eligibility case of quarterback David Wilson. The senators considered a variety of resolutions dealing with the Big Ten penalty, with some arguing against language that might anger conference officials on the eve of negotiations. The final draft says: the senate sup- ports Ikenberry and Cribbet in their discussions with the Big Ten; the senate resents the conference's attack on the integrity of Illinois; accepting the severe penalty would amount to admitting guilt; the penalty would cause unjustified damage to the entire athletic program and should be rejec- ted; and the university's integrity is more important than conference mern- bership.
