The Michigan Daily-Saturday, August 15, 1981-Page 9 Poll says Reagan's popularity is growing NEW YORK (AP) - President Reagan's job ratings have improved markedly following congressional passage of his economic program, the latest Associated Press-NBC News poll says. Reagan got good or excellent ratings for the job he is doing as president from 63 percent of the 1,601 adults selected in a scientific random sampling and con- tacted by telephone Monday and Tuesday. TWENTY-SIX percent of the respon- dents said Reagan is doing only a fair job as president, while 9 percent said he. is doing a poor job and 2 percent said they are not sure. In comparison, Reagan got only a 55 percent favorable rating in the AP-NBC poll last month. The 63 percent favorable rating in the latest poll is R.e agan's highest since shortly after he was wounded in an assassination at- tempt last spring. The increase of eight percentage points in the president's overall job rating coincides with an increase in good or excellent ratings for the way he is handling the economy. THE POLL SAID 52 percent gave Reagan favorable marks for his han- Voyager 2 prepares to fly- by Saturn PASADENA, Calif. (AP)- Voyager 2, dead on target after a journey of four years and 2 billion miles, is about to give Earthlings their third tour of the mystifying realm of Saturn. It will be: the last American cruise to another: world for half a decade. "We're getting out there to it-close up-to see again the beauties of that ringed planet," said assistant project scientist Ellis Miner. "I'ts something Galileo (the legendary 17th century astronomer) would really have relished." MINER CONCEDES Voyager 2 has a tough act to follow. But he says the show, which climaxes with a close en- counter Aug. 25, should certainly be worth watching. "Once we get up close and take looks at different areas and with different resolutions, we can't help but uncover a few new surprises that we just didn't anticipate." When Voyager 1-sistership of the unmanned spacecraft now closing on Saturn-buzzed the golden planet last November, visibly excited scientists at the mission-controlling Jet Propulsion Laboratory here began using words like "mind-boggling," "bizarre" and "weird." AND THE second Voyager, Miner said, with better viewing angles, is already producing better pictures than Voyager 1. The Voyagers, which poked, probed and pictured Jupiter in 1979, followed a trail blazed by a smaller Pioneer 11 that scarcely hinted at the wonders the more sophisticated ships would find. dling of the ecomony. Thirty percent said he is doing only a fair job with the economy, while 13 percent said he is doing a poor job and 5 percent were not sure. The president's favorable job rating for his handling of the economy in July was only 45 percent. Three of every four respondents said they had heard or read of Reagans economic program, and those people gave the president higher marks for his handling of the ecomony and for his overall job rating. AFTER GUIDING HIS tax-cutting and budget-cutting programs through Congress despite opposition from Democratic leaders, Reagan got his highest job ratings for the way he is working with the legislative branch. The poll said 69 percent gave the president good or excellent ratings for the job he is doing in working with Congress, with 21 percent saying he is doing only a fair job, 6 percent a poor job and 4 percent not sure. The passage of Reagan's programs, which he signed Thursday and which on Oct. 1 launch the biggest federal budget and tax cuts ever, may have also figured in a slight improvement in public opinion of Congress.
