Page 2-Friday, August 15, 198O-LfAthMichigan Daily Reproduction study group ends conference here By JOYCE FRIEDEN Everything from marijuana to sexual arousal in rats was under discussion this week at an unlikely location-Stockwell Hall-as the Society for the Study of Reproduction held its 13th annual meeting here. About 700 of the society's 1,500 mem- bers came to the conference held Tuesday through yesterday. "It was the largest turnout ever," said Howard Brinkley, professor of Zoology at the University of Maryland and a con- ference participant. BRINKLEY ADDED that although the society's members are mostly from North America, there are a few mem- bers from other parts of the world as well. He explained the society was formed to unite researchers studying different aspects of reproduction and inform them of work being done by their colleagues. "Reproductive biology " involves people who have divergent backgroun- ds," said Brinkley. "There are physiologists as well as endocrinologists here, Normally, some of these people would attend endocrinology meetings, while others would go to dairy science conventions. SSR brings this diverse groupall together." ONE RESEARCHER WHO traveled a long way to attend the meeting was Susan Dalterio, an assistant professor of pharmacology and obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Dalterio recently completed a four- year study on the effects of THC (the active ingredient in marijuana) when administered to female mice. "We (the researchers) discovered that THC decreased the level of sexual behavior in mice, just as it has been proven to do in human male users," she explained. "Then we decided to findout how THC affects the testosterone (male hor- mone) level in female mice pregnant with male mice, because that is the one time when it's essential to have enough of (testosterone)." Dalterio said that the resulting male mice had lower-than-normal levels of sexual behavior. "We think it indicates that pregnant women shouldn't use marijuana," she asserted. Brinkley said that although both students and professors were at the meeting, all of the scientitts found it easy to forget their "status." "The con- ference is a nice time for people to get together, relax, and talk science," he said. 219 S. Q Miss Piggy, take note Arnold, the beer-guzzling, cigarette-smoking, bubble gum-chewing pig, is in Hog Heaven, or at least in Pigatory. Bethel Mason's 1,000-pound pet porker died "sometime Monday night or Tuesday," said Mason's wife, Geneva. Arnold was laid to rest in a homemade metal coffin Wednesday at Mason's Texaco service station, 12 miles south of Rocky Point, Virginia, with about 60 mourners and a real minister officiating, Geneva Mason said. Arnold had Mason's station his home six years ago be repeatedly jumping a fence behind the place. Cause of death was unknown, but Geneva Mason said Arnold's diet was rife with many un-hoglike goodies. Besides the beer and cigarettes, she said Arnold "chewed bubble gum. He loved chocolate milk and apple pies, chocolate pies, those fried pies." - [ On the outside Today should be quite pleasant as mostly sunny skies are expected. The temperature will climb to the very comfortable upper-70s. Q Happenings FILMS AAFC-The Good, the Bad, and the Ligly, 7, 9:45 p.m., MLB 3.
