The Michigan Daily-Wednesday, August 13, 1980-Page 5 IT'S - WELL - DULL Convention hoopla vanishes By TOM MIRGA Special to The Daily NEW YORK - "Everybody came here to see some blood spilled. But now that the 'open convention' proposal has been shot down and Kennedy has said he won't go for the nomination, there's no excitement left." That was the proclamation yesterday of Hank Lacayo of Southfield, Mich., a delegate to the Democratic National Convention here. By nearly all accounts yesterday, the convention has become - well - dull. "NOBODY CARES about anything anymore," said Jean Mayer, the League of Women Voters represen- crowned, and I find the convention bloody dull." Rose Marie Schmidt, a delegate from California, attributed the absence of many delegates from yesterday's session to the Carter camp's victory over supporters of the so-called "open convention.", "Their bubble burst," she said, "and you can't blame many of them for not wanting to be here. I'd say half of the delegates aren't around today." DELEGATES WEREN'T the only people taking time off from the convention-related activities. Mitch Shapiro, a convention staff assistant in the special press section, said his office processed half as many requests for press credentials yesterday as they did Monday. "Monday there were at least 250 reporters nacked in here pushing and hollering for credentials, and look at it now," he said, pointing to a deserted hallway. Peter Pope, who also works in the special press credentials office said, "My bet is that the ex- citement won't reach Monday's peak again. Ever- body wanted to see the fight, but now that Carter's won the nomination for all practical purposes, there's not much for these people to get hot about." MARK WOLFF, who works for a Boston enter- tainment magazine, said, "I think it's all gone. The only real excitement for the week came (Monday). Now they're going over the platform and that material is a lot drier than the debate on the open convention proposal" Condition of wounded computer whiz still critical . DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - James Dallas Egbert, the 17-year-old com- puter genius whose mysterious disap- pearance last year was linked to the "Dungeons and Dragons" fantasy game, remained unconscious yesterday with a bullet would in his head. Max Peterson, spokesman for Gran- dview Hospital, said Egbert was in critical condition in the intensive care unit following surgery Monday. "IT DOESN'T LOOK too good," The young man's father, optometrist James Egbert of Huber Heights, said at the hospital. "They don't expect him to AP Photo make it." Police Lt. Mike Sammons said Egbert was shot once in the head and inson, that a .25-caliber automatic pistol was I by an found near him on a sofa in his apar- tment. Egbert disappeared from Michigan State University for 28 days last year and police speculated that he may have been deeply involved in a live version of the fantasy board game "Dungeons and Dragons," in which players must over- come such obstacles as dragons and maze-like dungeons to reach a treasure. Authorities speculated he may have been hiding in utility tunnels beneath the campus. y said. The Ann Arbor Film Cooperative yisid.r,, Presents at Aud. The expenditures on furniture, drapes and kitchen remodeling - which came at a time when the financially strapped school has announced tuition increases - sparked. renewed criticism of Mackey. The renovations, the first major improvements in the house since the 1950s, were long overdue and concentrated in the public areas of the three-story brick structure which are used frequently for official university functions, the "This is the front door to the university for its Stewart said.
