"DNA's extensive research over the past 10 months has disclosed no basis for concern by veterans of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki occupation force over an increased risk of adverse health effects," the Pen- tagon agency reported. About 100 ex-servicemen have filed claims with the Veterans Administration alleging they have contac- ted cancer and other serious illnesses as a result of exposure to radiation during cleanup operations at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. OFFICIALS SAY records indicate about 20,000 American servicemen were stationed in the two cities between September, 1945 and January, 1946. An atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima Aug. 6, 1945, and another on Nagasaki three days later. The nuclear agency report said a study of research done by both Japanese and U.S. scientists, including radiation measurements and soil analyses shortly af- ter the bombings, indicates that the highest possible dose an individual serviceman could have been ex- posed to in Hiroshima and Nagasaki was less than one rem. A rem is a standard unit of measurement of absor- bed radiation in living tissue.
