solute power taKen y is predecessor,
the late President Park Chung-hee.
Events that brought Gen. Chun Doo-
hwan to virtually undisputed control
since the assassination of Park last Oct.
26 bear remarkable resemblance to
those of two decades ago when Park,
then a young military officer, took over
the government and set the stage for 18
years of autocratic rule, political
analysts here maintain.
THEY ADD THAT it is increasingly
evident that Chun, 49, is jockeying into
position to follow in the footsteps of his
long-time mentor.
The newspaper Kyunghyang Daily
News, which frequently reflects gover-
nment views, recently ran an editorial
describing qualities needed by South
Korea's next president - in terms that
unmistakably described Chun and his
policies.
iWe should recognize the role of the
military elite in our modernization and
should never underestimate their con-
tribution to the future of our nation,"
the noners nid

irregularities should continue to be in
charge of the new era, and from which
a new leader should be born."
The phrase "eliminating all social
evils" referred to the current campaign
to "purify" the government and the
press, a drive patterned closely after
similar actions by Park in 1961.
Chun gained major power after Park
was slain by his own intelligence chief
in what was later described by
authorities as an attempted coup.
A devoted disciple of Park and at the
time his defense security commander,
Chun arrested the assassin, Kim Jae-
kyu, and 'also his own superior, the
martial law commander Gen. Chun
Seung-hwa, and chief presidential
secretary Kim Ke-won.
On Dec. 12 - the so-called "Night of
the Generals" - a group of younger of-
ficers led by Chun wrested control of
the military from established senior of-
ficers in a swift and violent coup.
It was a replay of 1961, when then
Maj. Gen. Park was chosen by
colleagues to lead a similar move.
