Trailing 5-3 in the ninth, the Bengals bounced back as Lance Parrish drew a one-out walk to ignite a rally. Pinch hit- ter Champ Summers followed by boun- cing a ground ball far to second baseman Frank White's left, but, the agile infielder made the play and threw Summers out, allowing Parrish to move on to second. RICHIE HE1iNER, pinch hitting for Tom Brookens, then lined a single just over the outstretched glove of White in-- to right field. The base hit scored Parrish and cut the Royal lead to 5-4. A third pinch hitter, Tim Corcoran, followed with a line-shot single that blazed right past reliever Dan Quisen- berry's glove, and Dave Stegman, run- ning for Hebner, legged it all the way to third. The comeback was not to be, however, as Lou Whitaker popped up to centerfielder Willie Wilson to end the game. The Royals put a mark on the board right away against Detroit starter Jack Morris. The speedy Wilson led off the game with a triple, and Brett, booed loudly by the Tiger partisans as a result of Tuesday night's skirmish with Milt Wilcox, brought home Wilson with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Kansas City ad- vantage. THE TIGERS turned it around quickly in their first, though, by tallying three runs on only one hit, a 410-foot John Wockenfuss round-tripper to left center field. With one out, Alan Trammell caught a Larry Gura delivery on the hand and trotted to first base. Steve Kemp followed with a walk, setting up Wockenfuss' three-run blast. The Royals put their first two runners on base in the second with nobody out, but Morris escaped unscathed, and he then coasted through the next two frames before encountering trouble in the fifth inning. White walked, moved to second by Wilson's sacrifice bunt, and sprinted home on Jamie Quirk's single through the box. The red-hot Brett then lashed a liner off first baseman Wockenfuss' glove for a single, and Royal catcher Darrell Porter followed suit with a ground Tigers, single right past Morris into center, scoring Quirk and knotting the game at 3-3. WILLIE AIKENS' sacrifice fly to center field put Kansas City in front, 4- 3, and that brought Sparky Anderson's white mane out of the Tiger dugout to remove Morris in favor of Roger Weaver, who put out the fifth-inning fire. The Tigers announced last night that Mark Fidrych will be brought up from Evansville and will be given the star- ting assignment against the Boston Red Sox next Tuesday. ATLANTA (AP) - The National League will vote during a league meeting next week in Detroit on whether to adopt the designated hitter rule, The Atlanta Journal reported yesterday. The newspaper said at least five of the 12 clubs are firmly behind the proposal. Seven teams must vote in favor of the rule to enact it, but the newspaper said its survey of team executives indicates four clubs are against the proposal while three are undecided. The Journal said the five teams favoring use of designated hitters are the Cardinals, the Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, San Diego Padres and Houston Astros. Certain "no" votes were listed for the Chicago Cubs, Cin- cinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates. The Los Angeles Dodgers, San Fran- cisco Giants and Montreal Expos are undecided about the proposal, the Journal said. Baseball executives said support for the designated hitter rule seems to be growing in the National League. After being defeated 9-3 in 1976, the rule was defeated by an 8-4 margin in an unbin- ding straw poll at the 1978 winter meetings.
