SEN. HENRY JACKSON (D-Wash.) (left), shares a joke with Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), prior to a meeting on
Capitol Hill yesterday. Kennedy told both Jackson and Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W. Va.), that he is considering them for the
vice-presidential spot should he win the Democratic presidential nomination.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Edward
Kennedy said yesterday he has infor-
med both Sen. Henry Jackson and
Senate Majority Leader Robert Byrd
that he is considering them for the
number two spot if he wins the
Democratic presidential nomination.
But Kennedy denied offering the vice
presidency to either man during
lengthy discussions which he held with
the two in separate meetings on Capitol
Hill.
KENNEDY, STILL fighting against
the odds in hopes of wresting the
nomination from President Carter, met
with Jackson (D-Wash.), about 30
minutes and with Byrd (D-W. Va.), for
more than an hour yesterday. Both
meetings were held at Kennedy's
request.
Asked specifically whether he offered
either man the second, spot on a Ken-
nedy ticket, the Massachusetts
Democrat said, "No, I did not offer
either Senator Jackson or Senator Byrd
a spot on my ticket. I did not offer it at
Kennedy noted, however, that both
men were worthy of consideration for
the number two spot on any Democratic
ticket. Asked specifically if he told
them they were on his list, Kennedy
replied, "Yes."
KENNEDY SAID both meetings
were set up to discuss efforts to "open"
up the Democratic National Conven-
tion, which opens next Monday in New
York City, so that a candidate other
than Carter can be considered.
Both Jackson and Byrd have called
for an open convention.
