ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Darrell
Johnson was fired yesterday as
manager of the Seattle Mariners and
Maury Wills, the former Los Angeles
Dodgers based-stealing king, finally got
his shot at leading a major league-
baseball team.
President Dan O'Brien} of the
Mariners announced, "We are relieving
Darrell Johnson and Don Bryant, our
bullpen coach, and are naming Maury
Wills to a two-year contract."
O'BRIEN said the two years starts
with the 1981 season although Wills
takes over immediately as the field
boss with the American League team.
Wills, 47, became the third black
manager in major league history,
preceded by Frank Robinson, who
managed the Cleveland Indians from
1975-77, and Larry Doby, who guided
the Chicago White Sox for part of one
season.
Johnson, who managed the Boston
Red Sox to an Ameritchn'Leagizecpen-

nant in 1975, has been the only manager
for the Mariners, who were formed in
1977.
"WE APPRECIATE everything
Darrell has done," O'Brien told a news
conference at Anaheim Stadium. "But
we want to take a new direction and we
think we have the man to do it."
Wills' first game as the Mariners'
skipper was last night against the
California Angels.
Wills, one of baseball's all-time base-
stealing leaders, has long wanted to be
a manager and made no secret of that
desire. Formerly a commentator for
NBC-TV, he has been a sportscaster on
cable television.

Giesler sidelined
MIAMI (AP) - Second-year tackle
Jon Giesler, previously a contender for
a starting position, is expected to be
sidelined six to eight weeks with a
shoulder injury, the Miami Dolphins
said yesterday.
Giesler, a standout on the Michigan
offensive line, whose last season was
1978, underwent surgery Sunday for a
shoulder separation suffered in a
scrimmage with the New Orleans Sain-
ts on Saturday. Giesler was listed in
satisfactory condition yesterday.
