The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, May 13, 1980-Page 15 Michigan thinclads beat Chicago By JON MORELAND The Michigan tracksters claimed victories in 14 of 19 events Saturday, and went on to defeat the Chicag( Track Club Saturday in their first home meet of the outdoor season. Cumulative team scores were not kept during the competition. The Wolverines came out charging and claimed the top two places in the 10,000-meter run and all three spots in the discus throw, then maintained their dominance throughout the remainder of the meet. Ed Ostrovich (31:38.1) and Steve Brandt (33:14.5) placed in the 10,000, while Dave Walmroth, Mike Boehmer, and Sam Angell swept the discus with tosses of 50.32, 49.64, and 46 meters, respectively. The tracksters will attempt to continue their string of impressive performances next weekend when they host the Ann Arbor Relays. It will be the Wolverines' final tuneup before the Big Ten Championships, which will be held in Champaign next weekend. Women advance to finals Penny Neer, Melanie Weaver and Debbie Williams each earned bids to the AIAW national track cham- pionships as Michigan finished fourth in the MAIAW Midwest regional meet at Michigan State this past weekend. Williams, who will be making her second con- secutive appearance in the national finals, claimed first place in the javelin event and fourth in the discus throw. Weaver captured the 3,000-meter run in 9:44, while Neer was first in the discus. Neer also plays on the Michigan women's basketball team. WEAVER'S TIME in the 3,000 set a school record, as did Sue Frederick's clocking of 4:34.2 in the 1,500 meters. Other Michigan performances of note included Brenda Kazinec's fourth-place showing in both the 100 and 200 meter events, and the third-place finish pulled off by the two-mile relay team of Dana Loesch, Lisa Larsen, Dawn Woodruff, and Frederick.
