Diggs begins
three-year
prison sentence
in federal jail

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (UPI) -
Former Rep. Charles Diggs Jr., (D-
Mich.), once the senior black in
Congress, entered federal prison
vesterdav tn beain serving a three-vear

kickbacks.
Diggs, 57, will serve his time at the
"country club" minimum security
facility at Maxwell Air Force Base
where former Attorney General John
Mitchell and several other prominent
figures from the Watergate scandal did
their stints.
He arrived in a private automobile,
nine hours before the deadline for him
to surrender, and declined to talk with
reporters.
DIGGS WAS convicted and sentenced
to concurrent three-year sentences on
11 counts of mail fraud and 18 counts of
filing false pay vouchers for certain
members of his congressional staff.
The government charged he obtained
$80,000 in the scheme.
He will be eligible for parole after he
serves one-third of his time and could
be released earlier to a halfway house
run by the Salvation Army.
Only non-violent and mostly white-
collar criminals are sent to Maxwell,
which gets its "country club" tag from
the fact it has no fences and is surroun-
ded by a golf course. The inmates can-
not use the golf course, but they can fish
in the Alabama River, play softball,
volleyball and basketball on the groun-
ds.'
Prison superintendent Joseph Crowe
said Diggs was given a physical
examination, a routine procedure for
new inmates, and advised about prison
procedures during his first day at the
institution.
Crowe said during the next 10 days
Diggs' skills will be analyzed and his
health and age considered to determine
what type of prison job he will be

Be careful, the snake's loaded
A bandit awakened a man in an apartment in Chicago yesterday
morning, pointed a boa constrictor at him and took six dollars before fleeing
on a bicycle, police said. Antonio Zavala, 28, told police the robbery occurred
in his northwest side apartment. Police said the boa constrictor was six feet
long. Policeman Arthur Nielsen said yesterday that Zavala chased the
robber, "but he didn't really want to catch him because he wouldn't know
what to do if he did." Investigators were told by an informant that a 15-year-
old boy had been seen in the area carrying a snake. Police found the snake
curled up in a box under a stairwell, but they didn't find the boy. Police
recorded the incident as an armed robbery. Q
