Gymnastics Soviet women gymnasts beat Romania for the Olympic team gold medal yesterday after superstar Nadia Comaneci fell off the uneven bars on her last event. Preserving an unbeaten record going back to the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, the mighty Russian team, led by new star Natalia Shaposhnikova, took revenge for a loss to Romania at the 1979 World Gymnastics Championship in Fort Worth, Texas. It was one of the most exciting team competitions in Olympic gymnastics history, with the outcome uncertain un- til the last of eight events over two days. Comaneci's embarassing fall and a brilliant Soviet finish in the floor exer- cises, including one mark of 10 and three 9.95s, decided the medals. East Germany took the bronze. Three young gymnasts scored perfect los in the optionals at Lenin Sports Palace, duplicating Comaneci's 10 on the balance beam and Shaposhnikova's perfect mark in vault in Monday's opening compulsories. Maxi Gnauck, 15, of East Germany notched a 10 in the uneven bars in leading her team to the bronze, and finished with the best individual score to lead the qualifiers for the Olympic all-around championship Thursday. Romanian 15-year-old Melita Ruhn scored 10 in the vault and Yelena Davydova, 18, of the Soviet Union got her perfect mark in floor exercises to the delight of nearly 12,000 boisterous fans. Comaneci ended up in fourth place, but still is a big threat for a gold medal in the all-around and on the individual apparatus exercises Friday. 1 She won the all-around gold medal and the uneven bars and balance beam in Montreal fouryears ago. Rica Reinisch of East Germany and Vladimir Salnikov and Sergei Kopliakov of the Soviet Union each won their second gold medals in men's com- petition, while Lina Kachushite of the Soviet Union.stopped the East German blitz of the women's events. He jerked 429 pounds and had a com- bination of 743 pounds, both better than the records he set last April in Belgrade. His snatch lift of 324.5 bettered an Olympic mark that had stood since 1964. Daniel Senet of France equaled Roussev's lift in the snatch but disap- pointed in the jerk and could finish only fourth, Joachin Kunz of East Germany finished second with a combined lift of 737 pounds and Minchto Pachov of Bulgaria was third with a total of 715 pounds.
