The Michigan Daily-Saturday, May 10, 1980-Page 17 Scholars discuss Southeast d Asia By JOYCE FRIEDEN Scholars from as far away as Canada and Louisiana came to Ann Arbor yesterday to attend the First Michigan Conference on South and Southeast Asia. One hundred-twenty conference participants and 29 lecturers met during the morning and afternoon in the Michigan League to hear the first four in a series of eight panel discussions concerning the region. YESTERDAY'S activities included a Gamelan (Indonesian orchestra) performance, an Indian dance recital, and a Vietnamese dinner held at the First United Methodist Church. The mornining's activities began with a two-hour discussion on religion and communal dynamics in South Asia. Among the four speakers was Kendall Folkert, professor of religion at Central Michigan University, who discussed various Southeast Asian ethnic groups and their religious ties. Another speaker, Sociology and Anthropology Prof. George Somers of Adrian College, discussed the role of the headman, the priest, and the shaman in village life. SOMERS DESCRIBED the shaman's task of driving away evil spirits from the body by using a story concerning a sick child. Three different shamans attempted to cure the child, he said, with sacrifices of chickens and white doves to placate the evil spirits. The child, who was suffering from dehydration, was finally taken to a local hospital, where he died. "The villager's idea of good is the absence of evil," Somers said, "and their spirits can be either malevolent or AP Photo benevolent." e added that some of the villagers blamed the child's death on a hospital nun who had prayed over him parlia- before he died. leader -td put edy to ASSOCIATION HUMANISTIC PSYCHOLOGY e meets every Sunday ee at the First Unitarian Church 1917 Washtenaw at 7:30 P.M.
