Slain in the attack, blamed on left- wing extremists, was Lt. Col. Roger Vergara Campos, 43. His driver was wounded. AN ARMY SPOKESMAN said - Vergara's car was cut off by a taxi and a gray truck painted to resemble an electric cormpany vehicle. He said the killers leaped from the truck and fired dozens of bullets into the car. The gas tank was hit and as the car burst into flames the gunmen walked around the vehicle; shooting into it, the government-controlled news agency ORBE reported. It said another army officer in a passing auto rushed over as the killers drove away and pulled the two victims from the flames.
