Page 2-Saturdav. July 12, 1980-The Michinan Doily Have a chaw of... sugar? What has as much as 60 per cent sugar and is chewed by nearly four million Americans yearly? Chewing tobacco, the stuff that famous baseball players are made of. Not only do partakers of a chaw risk contracting oral, cancer, but tooth decay as well, according to Prevention Magazine. Research conducted at Temple University's School of Dentistry indicated an average of 34 per cent sugar in the pouch type and 24 per cent in plug chewing tobacco. Most of the sugar was added by the manufacturers to make the chew more palatable. "Chewing two grams of tobacco (a pinch) releases approximately 25 to 35 per cent sugar into the saliva, which bathes the teeth," said research team director Dr. Robert Going. It might be wise to stick to sucking your thumb. p On the outside The weather bureau predicts conditions will remain partly cloudy, hot and humid with a chance of evening thundershowers throughout the week- end.
