Vikings'Reaves
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Sheriff's officers were seeking Minnesota Vikings
reserve quarterback John Reaves last night to serve him with a mental health
center center commitment order from a judge.
The commitment order was signed Wednesday to Circuit Judge Benjamin C.
Sidwell in Tampa. Three of Reaves' friends sought the commitment, saying he was
"spaced out on drugs."
REAVES' WIFE, PATTY, said her husband could be confined to the
0 Hillsborough Mental Health Center as long as 28 days.
"He's a fantastic person," she said. "Football has been his life. He's always
tried so hard and it's been one frustration after another.
"His whole ego, his whole identity has been tied to football. He's tried to over-
come that, but he can't. I think he feels like he's a total wipeout as a human being."
REAVES, 30, JOINED the Vikings last season but didn't play a down. He was
not expected to make the final cut this year.
Reaves was picked up twice in May on charges of driving while intoxicated.
During the second arrest, May 23, police also found a small amount of marijuana
in the car Reaves was driving. He had been scheduled to appear in court yesterday
on a charge of marijuana possession.
According to his friends, Reaves became irrational Monday night in a Tampa
restaurant. When he behaved irrationally again Tuesday night, the friends, who
own the restaurant, filed the commitment affidavits.
LOU ANN SALMON said she had known Reaves for some time and added, "I
believe him to be totally out of his mind at this time."
"We're shocked and distressed to hear about the incidents in Florida involving
John Reaves," said Vikings Coach Bud Grant in a prepared statement. "We want
his family to know of our concern and we hope that John can make a complete
recovery."
