KUMASI, Ghana (UPI)-A scream-
ing, drum-beating throng estimated at
one million people greeted Pope John
Paul II in the equatorial jungle
yesterday in the most tumultuous
welcome yet of the pontiff's
pilgrimmage to Africa.
The pope met the king of a legendary
nation of Ashanti warriors in the rain
forest following a historic encounter in
Accra between the pope and the new
Anglican Archbishop of Canterbuy,
Robert Runcie.
