Page 2-Thursday, July 10, 1980-The Michigan Daily Republican Party won't endorse ERA (Continuedfrom Page 1) - lose support among voters if it failed to endorse the ERA and maintained a rigid anti-abortion stance. "I PERSONALLY believe that these two actions could prevent our party from electing the next president of the UnitedStates," said Crisp. "Our party has endorsed and worked for the ERA for 40 years," she said. "Now we are reversing our position and are about to bury the rights of over 100 millisn American women under a heap of platitudes." But Crisp, whose term as co- chairwoman expires at the copclusion of the Republican National Convention, was fighting a losing battle. THE COMMITTEE also approved platform wording that supports a con- stitutional amendment that would prohibit abortions, easily turning back two proposals to soften the wording. As written, the platform supports a constitutional amendment banning abortion and commits the party to work against any federal funding for abor- tion activities. Delegate John Leopold of Hawaii had sought to amend the section on women's rights to declare "we affirm our party.s historic commitment to the Equal Rights Amendment end equality for women." "This is the largest group of African elephants found outside Africa," a spokesperson for the International Wildlife Park in Grand Prairie, Texas said Tuesday. Asked how the baby elephants were doing in Texas' intense summer heat, the spokesperson said, "Fine. The temperature is comparable to South Africa." The pachyderms, ranging in age from one to four, are confined to an "elephant section" about 400 feet long and 500 feet wide. Eventually, some will be shipped to zoos around the nation. Qi.
