The Michigan Daily-Saturday, May 10, 1980-Page 5 Chrysler continues efforts to secure loan WASHINGTON (AP)-The Chrysler Loan Guarantee Board adjourned yesterday after a four-hour meeting without reaching a final decision on whether to give a go-ahed for Chrysler Corp. to receive $1.5 billion in federal aid. Treasury Secretary G. William Miller told reporters the board will meet again at noon today to try to reach a final decision on aid for the financially troubled aitomaker. MILLER SAID the government. board still needs to know what aid the Canadian government is prepared to give Chrysler before it can decide on U.S. aid. "This is a long, difficult financing ... We haven't got the final answer on the Canadian part of the financial plan," he said at an impromptu news conference. The Canadian government has not yet given final approval to $20 million loan guarantees for Chrysler. But Miller indicated that negotiations are still continuing in Canada and that the U.S. board hoped to know the outcome by today's meeting. MILLER APPEARED confident that a final go-ahead could be given to the financing plan today. In Ottawa, Canada's Industry Minister Herb Gray, after talking to Miller by telephone, said, "The U.S. board can make up its own mind without hearing from Canada." The continuing delays in final approval of the $1.5 billion in federal loan guarantees for Chrysler reflects the complex financial package that must first be put together before the aid can be improved.
