They're erasing the inside of the 123- year-old First Congregational Church in Lee, Mass. in an effort to save its unique wall paintings. Tucker has been working at the church for the past five weeks, trying to remove the accumulated dirt and grime on the 12,000 square feet of the church's sanctuary. As an expert in art restoration who -studied in Florence, Italy, she was faced with a problem: How to remove the dirt without also taking off the water-soluble trompe l'oeil on the church's walls and ceilings. "I worked for over three hours with everything in my test kit," Tucket said. "Then it occurred to me to try an eraser. It went through my mind that this was crazy, but it was just perfect." She said the secret is to develop your own style of erasing, something she encourages among the workers. "I gave them an esthetic standard-no streaks," she said. "Some work better with long strokes, some with short." Rousting roosting pigeons Russ Barton was hired by the town of Frenchtown, N.J. to get rid of the pigeons. For $100 per year and all the birdshot shells they need, Barton and Glinn Hummer are doing the job. "I shoot 'em anywhere and anytime there's a complaint, but never on a Sunday 'casue of all the people going to church," Barton said. The two sharpshooters were retained by the Bourough Council a few weeks back to terminate "the pigeon problem" in the rural community of 1,500 residents. Mayor Dave Johnson said, "We've got things pretty much under control, but the pigeons don't seem to get discouraged."1- On the outside The folks at the weather bureau say this morning's clouds will give way to partly sunny skies which, combined with temperatures in the mid- 80s, should make for a beautiful afternoon. Our suggestion: Brown-bag it today and have lunch with a friend on the Diag. Happenings FILMS AAFC-Shop Around the Corner, 7, 10:20 p.m.; The Merry Widow, 8:40 p.m., Aud. A, Angell.
