(AP) - Clarince Wheat, a terminally ill convict, was carried out of the Mississippi state prison earlier this year, pardoned by the governor so he could die at home with his family, This week, authorities say, he shot and killed his wife and son and then took his own life. SHERIFF HOWARD Huggins, who had known Wheat for 40 years, says releasing the convict was "a dumb move.' Wheat, 61, suffering from diabetes, heart disease, and terminal cancer and barely able to walk, was freed from the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Par- chman in January. On Monday, he pulled the trigger on a shotgun and killed himself after shooting his wife and son to death at Chances fo Ill. ERA vol SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Chances are "about zero" that the Equal Rights Amendment will be called for another vote in the Illinois House this year, a chief sponsor of the amendment said yesterday as ERA supporters reaffir- med plans to push the issue at the ballot box. Three other legislative sponsors and Eleanor Smeal, president ._of the National Organization for Women (NOW), agreed it might be better to wait until next year - when supporters hope to have more sympathetic legislators in the House. But Rep. James Taylor (D-Chicago), added: "I'm not saying we're through at all for this session." ON WEDNESDAY, the amendment fell five votes short of the 107 needed to pass the House. The vote was 102-71, three fewer votes than the ERA got in their home near Lexington, officers say. . HUGGINS, SHERIFF of Holmes County, said he had objected to releasing Wheat, who had served eight months of a five-year term for shooting at police officers during a family disturbance at his home. "I remember, someone came by here and asked if he should be let out," Huggins said. "My answer was no. "I still say, if he had been up at Par- chman like he ought to have been, two people would have been living." State Corrections Commissioner John Watkins said it was routine policy in Mississippi and many other states to release terminally ill prisoners. r another re zero~ the last House vote in June 1978. It was ERA's seventh defeat in the Illinois House since 1972. Rep. John Matijevick (D-North Chicago),,_ said the amendment likely would be defeated again if sponsors called for a vote before June 3, scheduled adjournment date for the General.Assembly's spring session. He said it also would probably be defeated in the fall veto session, when attendance generally is low. "The likelihood of calling it before January is about zero," said Matijevich. ERA sponsors note that a number of incumbent House members who op- posed the amendment were defeated in the primary last March. As a result, they expect several new pro-ERA lawmakers to be elected in the Novem- ber general election. $4 for about 45 minutes partici- pation in research project on thinking and emotions.
