Coach Brian Eisner's netters enter the tournament as the ninth-ranked team in the nation and as the only Big Ten team to hold an unblemished conference record. The Wolverines' fone setback came at the hands of the top-ranked team in the country, California-Berkeley. Last year's defending champion at number three singles, Michael Leach, will occup Michigan's first singles position where he will face stiff opposition from undefeated Ernie Fernandez of Ohio State. - "I'm as optimistic as anybody," said Leach. "Our team is trying not to be overconfident. Fernandez will be tough at number 1. Nothing is decided until Sunday," he added. Fernandez emphasized that Michigan is going to the tournament without being "up" for the rest of the teams in the Big Ten. "We're pretty confident," said Fernandez. "Michigan has to fight nine other schools in order to win it." And about his own match, Fernandez stated that the key to his game will be his serve. If he serves well, he feels that no one can beat him. In addition to Leach, Michigan returns two other conference champions in Matt Horwitch, the number two winner last year and Jack Neinken, winner at number six. Horwitch, 16-3 overall and undefeated at the second singles position is favored to win at that position this year. Neinken moved up to number five this SCORES BASEBALL AMERICAN LEAGUE Milwaukee 9, Baltimore 1 NATIONAL LEAGUE San Diego 9, Chicago 6 HOCKEY Philadelphia 7, Minnesota 3 , Buffalo 2, N.Y. Coach Eisner's first doubles combination of Leach and Horwitch are undefeated at that position, winning all 15 of those contests. They both are returning to the tournament as all- Conference netters from 1979. Wisconsin's Ken Thomas, the number three singles champion in 1978, and Dave Pelisek are the only doubles pair to seriously challenge the two Wolverines for the title. Other Wolverines expected to perform extremely well are number four singles player Jud Shaufler, who finished 8-1 in the Big Ten this year; Mark Mess, the number three standout, with an overall record of 18-1; and Tom Haney, who rounds out the sixth position in this very strong Michigan lineup. Looking to bring Michigan's dominance to an abrupt halt are Ohio State, Indiana and Wisconsin. The Buckeyes boast a 17-4 overall mark and a 7-1 slate in the Big Ten, and should provide the only serious challenge to Michigan. Indiana, the surprise of the league lost but twice in the conference, one of those to Michigan, 7-2. Wisconsin, another strong team, lost three matches in the Big Ten all season, those being to Michigan, Ohio State and Indiana. Northwestern is another team to consider, but last year's runnerup seriously lacks the depth to beat a Michigan or an Ohio State. So heading into the event this morning at 9 a.m., it looks as if. Michigan will run away with it. The Wolverines are 17-1 overall and have defeated all 9 of the opponents they faced in the Big Ten this year. And all of the victories have been quite convincing, including shutout wins over Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue and Michigan State. If the Wolverines are overconfident as Ohio State's Fernandez would like them to. be, it could pose a real problem. But Michigan has not had much of a problem in this respect so far, this season. It will be decided Sunday. 4 4 Matt Horwitch returning champ FF= CAMPBELL CHECKS UP: Fidrych's fate? I Linksters shoot for OSU in North Inv. I By M. J. SCHNEIDER Earlier this season, it may have been the impossible dream. This weekend, Michigan's men's golf team hopes to make the dream-beating Ohio State-a reality. As hosts of the Northern Intercollegiate Invitational, the Blue linksters know the course better than their competitors, which may be a distinct advantage. Despite this advantage, Michigan coach Tom Simon refused to predict victory. "Obviously there is an advantage to playing your home course," said Simon. "But I'm not going to say we'll win. "The favorites- have to be Ohio State," projected Simon. "Ohio State is a good team and they're playing well." Michigan started the season slowly, finishing 19th in a field of 24 teams at the Kepler Invitational, hosted by Ohio State. Last week, at Wisconsin, the Wolverines notched a third place finish, behind tournament winner Ohio State and runners-up Michigan State. "We have a good team," said Simon. "It's just a matter of putting it all together." The Invitational begins today and runs through Sunday here in Ann Arbor. I 4 Golf coach Simon homecourse advantage?
