Oates' two goals push Express past Dallas, 5-1 By DAN CONLIN and DREW SHARP Special to the Daily PONTIAC-Sam Oates' two goals paced the Detroit Express to a 5-1 victory over the Dallas Tornado last night at the Silverdome. The triumph was the sixth of the season for Detroit and snapped a two- game losing streak. The Express didn't even allow the crowd of 9,688 the chance to get com- fortable in their seats before notching their first tally. Forward Don Nar- diello scored 25 seconds into the game to get the Express charged. Dalles tied the score at 22:30 of the first half when midfielder Peter Gruber scored on a rebound shot off of Express goalie Jim Brown. It was totally the Express after that. Oates scored his first goal on a header after a perfect feed from forward Pato Margetic 29:38 into the first half. The dazzling, young 20-year-old Margetic then danced his way to the third Detroit score of the half with only 35 seconds remaining. In the second half, the Express didn't get a shot on goal for the first 15 minutes, but when they finally got the shot, they made it count. Margetic placed another perfect lob kick right into the penalty area where striker Gary Bannister banged it home to put the Express out front, 4-1. Oates put the icing on the cake with 3:50 remaining in the game when he knocked in Nardiello's pass in front of the net for his seventh goal of the year, which is tops on the club. Nardiello's opening goal set a team record for the quickest goal scored in a contest. The previous record was 1:45 and was held by Keith Furphy. The win still leaves Detroit in the cellar of the Central Division of the NASL American Conference with a record of 6-9. The Express' next game is against the Memphis Rogues at Memphis on Saturday night. (AP)-Veteran Boston Celtics guard Don Chaney will become assistant coach of the Detroit Pistons, the team with the worst record in the National Basketball Association last season. The Pistons announced yesterday that Chaney, a 12-year NBA veteran, will step down as an active player to help newly-appointed Detroit Coach Scotty Robertson try to turn the Pistons into a winning team. The NBA team won just 16 games last season. The last time the Pistons had a winning record was 1976-77, when they finished five games above the .500 mark. Detroit General Manager Jack McCloskey said Chaney will serve as Robertson's bench assistant and will be respon- sible for practice and scouting. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Chaney will join the Pistons on June 27 to direct the club's participation in the California Summer Pro League. "Don Chaney brings the Celtics' winning tradition in his background as well as a solid grounding in fundamentals, especially defense," McCloskey said. Back in line, Billy NEW YORK (AP)-American League President Lee Piston assistant MacPhail has fined Oakland Manager Billy Martin for "over- aggressive dissent" during an on-the-field argument with home plate umpire Dale Ford June 8 and has rejected Mar- tin's claim that Ford pushed him during the altercation. A statement released yesterday by MacPhail's office in- dicated the league president's action, which was taken after Martin asked the AL to investigate Ford's conduct. Martin had charged after the June 8 game in Oakland between the A's and Boston that Ford had pushed him and, after the game, had challenged him to a fight.
