Zorn will replace English Prof. John Knott, acting LSA Dean whose term as associate dean for curriculum expires July 1. The Regents are expected to act on the nomination either today or tomorrow, "I'M ENTHUSIASTIC about it (the appointment)," Zorn said. "I really have respect for the people we have as. president and vice-presidents." Zorn has been with the University since 1962. He received the University's Distinguished Service Award in 1967, and also has served as the acting direc- tor of the Residential College. "We are indeed fortunate that someone of Prof. Zorn's ability and varied experience has agreed to serve as associate dean for curriculum and to share in the administrative respon- sibilities of the College," Knott said in a letter to the LSA faculty. ZORN SAID. HE would like to see "encouragement of excellence" in the College. "We have not given care to our really best students," he said.. The nominee said he would also like to see the College made available to persons not in the 18- to 22-year-old range. "There are people who drive from Ann Arbor to Jackson to take a night course from a professor who has driven from Ann Arbor to Jackson," he said. Excellence in teaching also has to be recognized, Zorn said. Students often are unaware of faculty members who have won awards or who have done distinguished work, and should know this information when choosing cour- ses, he said. He, added this recognition is also im- portant because "the emotional rewar- ds for teachers are going to be even more important in facing this (up- coming) financial crunch."
