Mutant pop or e

By JIM ROBINS
"Clemma rock means honest music,"
says Mutants' drummer Steve Sortor
over the rhythmic din of a new Gottlieb
pinball machine. The Mutants are the
band comprised of practitioners of
Clemma Rock. Sortor promises to tell
the truth about the group's activities,
something he asserts calmly,
knowingly, the rest of the band will not
do. "I'll give the facts," states Sortor.
"They'll provide the color."
The Red Carpet Lounge dressing room
used to be the coatroom: Now
crowded inside the former walk-in
closet are Mutants Art Lysack
(vocals), Tom Morwatts (guitar), and
John Amore (bass), all amped and
waiting to go on stage. The group's
blonde psychiatrist looks on smiling
demurely, a copy of the latest Jim
Morrison biography at her side.
"Randy Newman, Dean Martin, the
Kinks, Burl Ives, and Belefonte," lists
Amore. "In that order," referring to his
wide range of musical influences.
Suggested
cuts could

Health
Dept. hard
LANSING (UPI) - State Mental
Health Director Frank Ochberg said
yesterday he may appeal a proposed
$21 million budget cut which would hit
his troubled department hard and slow
the state's highly touted community
placement program.
In a wide-ranging news conference,
Ochberg also said accelerated layoffs
of 1,500- workers during the current
fiscal year will result in downgraded
but "tolerable" care in state in-
stitutions and said he will ask a federal
judge for permission to include the
scandal-scarred Plymouth Center for
Human Development in the cut. ,
THE 40-YEAR-OLD administrator
said he believes it maybe possible after
the election to discuss a tax hike to
bolster the state's depleted revenues.
Ochberg, who has seen several state
institutions lose accreditation during
his 10 months in office, criticized the
Joint Commission on Accreditation of
Hospitals for placing undue stress on
institutional rather than community
care.
The budget cut was one of $250 million
in 1980-81 reduction targets issued to
state department heads by Budget,
Director Gerald Miller for review and
comment. The fiscal year begins in Oc-
tober.
"I think we are going to appeal it,"
Ochberg said. However, he said his
department "may very well have to
live with this."
"I don't know where the money is" to
avoid such cuts, he conceded.

"SINATRA AND IGGY Pop," adds
vocalist Art Lysack."Sometimes I get
the two confused." The days run into
nights-the nights back to days-then
somehow they get squeezed together. ,
No wonder Funkadelic chieftan George
Clinton is producing this band.
Besides citing a wide variety of
musicians as sources of inspiration for
the Mutants' music, the group also
claims that drugs play an important
role in the band's sound. Guitarist Tom
Morwatts who has a masters degree in
chemistry, now has taken his skills into
the field. In conversation he touches on
pharmecuticals with a nod to valium
and beer. The Betty Ford Cocktail wins
nods of approval all around, except
from the psychistrist who lifts her head,
purses her lips and says she's notgoing
to fill anymore prescriptions for the
band tonight. In light of all the drug
related tragedies in the entertainment
world, sadly highlighted by Richard
Pryor's accident last week, one can
understand the doctor's concern.
Lysack who is attired in a svelte black-
on-black tuxedo, definitely not
constructed from natural fibers, warns

all: "If you're going to do free base,
wear cotton." As hard as it is, he
obviously is following doctor's orders.
"Our prime concern is keeping our
sanity," he adds.
The Mutants view the world with a
jaundiced eye. Their lead singer was
once bitten on the leg by a zealous and
hungry fan. They find themselves
relaxing to reruns of Leave it to Beaver
or the gut wrenching honesty of Family
Feud, All My Children and General
Hospital. "We are the best educated
band in rock and roll," explains
Morwatts.
"There's only so many slices in the
rock and roll pie," adds Lysack. "We're
ready for ours now."
"SO AMERICAN," "Piece of S--t,"
College Grad," "Cafe Au Lait," and a
ditty about Art Linkletter's daughter
that goes; "Did your daughter ever
jump out a window? Did she ever do
something that really embarrassed
you?", are just a few of the original
compositions in the Mutants'
repertoire. It's their fine musical
reportage that is catapaulting the

Mutants from the 9-to-5 world and may
propel them to the top of the rock and
roll heap.
The Mutants are not all the same size.
They don't wear matching tight red
leather suits. They don't sing about
their "old ladies" and the anguish of
"those Hollywood nights." If the
Mutants make a gesture toward
convention, it comes out of conviction,
not submission to a current trend or
fashion. "A lot fo smart shopping can
be done at K-Mart," says Amore.
"That's where I bought these deck
shoes. Whether I'm mowing the lawn or
playing bass, I wear them."
The Mutants want to entertain you.
"We give more entertainment units per
dollar," promises Morwatts. "More
units than Barry Manilow, more than
the Rolling Stones." Tonight when the
Mutants play Ann Arbor's Second
Chance, go see them and crowd up close
to the stage. Besides getting a good
rock and roll value, you may receive
one of those small, mysterious doses of
Clemma Mutants' guitarist Pat
(Pasadena) Supine allegedly
distributes.
