MORRIS GOES THE DISTANCE

Tigers slam Chicago, 8-4

By BUDDY MOOREHOUSE
Special to the Daily
DETROIT-A six run fifth inning
provided the margin for the Tigers, as
Detroit took the first of a three game
series from the Chicago White Sox last
night, 8-4.
Starter Jack Morris went the distan-
ce for the Tigers as he evened his
record of 6-6. Morris %as perfect the
first three innings although he got
shaky later in the game. But the lead
the Tigers had built proved to be too
much for the visitors.
The Tigers got on the board in the
second inning as Richie Hebner tripled
and then scored on a Tom Brookens
single. Brookens then came home with

a single by Lou Whitaker.
The game stayed quiet until the fifth
when the Tiger bats exploded for six
runs. Alan Trammell led off with a
triple and then came home on an Al
Cowens double. Lance Parrish followed
suit with a two bagger that scored
Cowens. That spelled the end for ChiSox
starter Steve Trout who was replaced
by righty Mike Proly.
Champ Summers took first when he
caught a Proly curve with his foot.
Hebner then knocked a single that
scored Parrish, raising the Bengal lead
to 5-0. After Brookens reached first on
an error, Duffy Dyer singled home
Summers.
Brookens then recorded the fifth run
of the inning on a sacrifice grounder by

Whitaker. Jim Lentine capped the
scoring with a single that scored Dyer.
Chicago finally got on the board with
two runs in the sixth inning, including a
home run by catcher Mary Foley.
The White Sox added two more in the
eighth on a two run blast by Lamar
Johnson, but it wasn't enough to over-
come the Tiger lead.
The win boosts Detroit to 25-28 on the
season, while the Sox drop to 29-29.
Texas takes Toronto-
TORONTO (AP) - Al Oliver drove in
three runs, two with a double in Texas'
five-run seventh inning, as the Rangers
beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 Friday
night. t
Doc Medich, 6-3, struck out three bat-

ters and walked three, scattering nine
hits before getting last-out help from
Sparky Lyle, who earned his sixth save.
PINCH-HITTER John Grubb's two-
out single drove home Jim Norris with
the first run of the seventh inning.
Mickey Rivers' infield single scored
Dave Roberts and Bump Willis followed
with a single which scored Grubb and
chased Toronto starter Dave Stieb, 5-4.
Oliver, who doubled home Wills for
the first Texas run in the fourth inning,
greeted reliever Jerry Gravin with a
double to right-center to score the final
two runs for a 6-0 lead. Al Woods
doubled home Bob Davis from first
base in the eighth inning to break up
Medich's shutout bid,

SPOR TS OF THE DAILY:

Martin
By BUDDY MOOREHOUSE
With the temperature in the 80's and
cut-offs the most prevalent campus
fashion, not many sports enthusiasts
have their mind on ice hockey. But the
summer season notwithstanding,
Michigan hockey coach Wilf Martin is
staying busy.
Martin has indicated that Kelly MC-
Crimmon of Plenty, Sask. and Steve
Yoxheimer of Jackson have decided to
enroll at Michigan. McCrimmon, whose
brother Brad plays for the Boston
Bruins, scored 38 goals in the last two
seasons playing for the Brandon Wheat
Kings of the Western Hockey League.
McCrimmon is noted for his defen-
sive ability and is a former teammate
of Michigan sophomore Brad Tippett.
Yoxheimer is a graduate of Jackson
Lumen Christi High School where he
earned five letters in hockey and
basketball. He was an All-League selec-
tion in his final two seasons at Lumen
Christi.
"I'm in kind of a strange position
because I haven't seen either one of
them play," said Martin. "I've only
been here two months, so I recruited
them mainly on the recommendations
of Danny (Farrell) and John Giordano.
But I don't think there's any question
that they'll be able to contribute right
away."
In addition to his new recruits, there
is another matter that concerns Martin.
Sophomore All-American Murray
Eaves may be leaving the Wolverines,
as he was the first player chosen from
the college ranks in Wednesday's
National Hockey League draft, going in
the third round to the Winnipeg Jets.
"Murray was just in to talk to me,
and as of yet he hasn't been offered a
contract by the Jets," said Martin,
"The big thing of course is the money..
If the money is right, he'll gok"
Martin would obviously like to keep
Eaves, who led the Wolverine icers in
scoring last season with 36 goals and 49
assists.
Martin also indicated that the other.

Douglas to Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)-The
Kansas City Kings ended their search
for front-line strength by signing free
agent Leon Douglas to a purported $1.6
million contract over the next five
National Basketball Association
seasons.
Douglas, 25, a 6-foot-10, 230-pound
center, was a first-round pick of Detroit
in 1976, and played out his contract with
the Pistons. He signed with the Kings
Thursday.
Also able to play forward, Douglas
comes off a frustrating season with
Detroit where he was limited to 70
games because of ankle and knee
sprains.
His scoring average last season dip-
ped to 8.1 after two straight seasons in
double figures of 10.9 and 11.4. His
rebound average also slipped proved
his free-throw shooting to .676 and his
assists to 121.
"He gives us more versatility on the
front line," said Cotton Fitzsimmons,
Kings head coach. "We plan to use Leon
at both strong forward and center
positions."
