more supportive of the President's
plan.
"I HAVE TO support it-it may
become necessary to defend my coun-
try," said Ken Lanet, a senior
engineering student. "Then again, it
doesn't affect me, so that's easy to
say," he continued.
Thomas Drotar, an LSA junior, also
said he supported the legislation. "I
spent a lot of time overseas," he said,
referring to the need for registration.
"There's a lot of people who want to
have their cake and eat it too," added
Drotar, who said he would not be affec-
ted by the plan.
"I happen to be in ROTC. I'm in favor
of it (registration). This all-volunteer
thing isn't working," said engineering
sophomore Jim Dixon.
SOME OF THOSE interviewed did
voice opposition to the plan, however.
"Luckily I just turned 21. I still worry
about registration because I don't know
whether the draft is right or
not-whether it's necessary or not. I
don't know whether it's been proven,"
said LSA sophomore Bob Porter.
Brad Gronvall, a Washtenaw Com-
munity College student, also said he
was opposed to the bill. "I wouldn't be
affected by it, but I feel to get involved
in a war over gas lines is fairly foolish,"
he said.
EDITH HEFLEY, a member of the
Washtenaw Committee Against
Registration and the Draft (CARD),
said, "I think this passage is a triumph
of the military-industrial component
which dominates Washington, and a
tragedy for young persons who are
being used as political pawns to rein-
sure the election of the president."
Hefley added she was "distressed
that Senator (Edward) Kennedy . . .
and other so-called liberal senators
were not there at the cloture vote."
Hefley said CARD would be
stationing people outside post offices at
registration time with conscientious ob-
jector forms. Margaret Duncan, of the
Public Interest Researcj Group in
Michigan (PIRGIM), said her
organization would be doing the same
thing.
CARD won't encourage people not to
register, Hefley said, because that is a
felony. However, the group will inform
people of their rights and encourage
them to make their own decisions, she
said.
