By American or European standards, the kidnapping is minor - the ransom was only about $40,000 - but the case has filled the newspapers, kept Israelis glued to their radios for the latest news bulletins and prompted a call from Prime Minister Menachem Begin to the boy's family. POLICE, ARMY and hundreds of civilians have joined in the hunt for Oron Yarden, who disappeared Sunday from the wealthy Tel Aviv suburb of Savyon. The boy's father, Amos, paid the ran- som on Tuesday. But when he went to the painted barrel marked by the kid- nappers as the rendezvous point with his son, Oron was nowhere to be seen. Police immediately mounted a massive air, land, and later sea search for the curly-headed boy and called on all Israelis to give whatever aid they could. Among those offering their ser- vices were several people claiming psychic powers and a woman who said she could sniff out the kidnappers with her extraordinarily sensitive nose. ON WEDNESDAY, Begin called the Yarden family to say he had ordered the army to join the search. "Only rarely do the sentiments of an entire nation become so intensely con- centrated on the fate of a single child," wrote the Maarive newspaper in an editorial. The two previous cases of kidnapping for ransom - the most recent was more than three years ago - were far less emotional. One involved a dispute over some stolen diamonds; the second was a family dispute. The kidnapping of a young boy from a non-religious family by his ultra- orthedox grandfather in the early 1950s caused a storm in Israel and almost toppled the government. The Israeli secret service finally recovered the bpy in Brooklyn wherearelatives had plan- ned to give him a strict Jewish up- bringing. But presiding Justice Bernard Jef- ferson of the Court of Appeal panel that sent the case back to the lower court Wednesday said "the reality of the 'wrongful life' concept is that such a plaintiff both exists and suffers due to the negligence of others." SHAUNA'S PARENTS, Hyam Curlender, 32, and Philis Curlender, 31, have also filed suit on their own behalf for emotional and financial damages incurred by having to care for the child, who is hospitalized. All together, the San Fernando Valley family is seeking to recover the costs of the child's care, damages for emotional distress and $3 million punitive damages. But the Curlenders' attorney, Roland Wrinkle, said yesterday the appellate court ruling recognizes, for the first time, the child's right to sue in such a case.
