Tamborriello called this an "alienating ' experience." "Men don't suffer so much from discrimination as they do from dehumanization," he claimed. The consequences of this are "reslly far- reaching," Tamborrilleo said, because Buildings, habitats focus of research By JOYCE FRIEDEN Everything from single buildings to entire regions is under observation at the Institute for Social Research's U6e ban Environmental Research Pro- gram. The program's ten research- ers, who study issues such as discrimination in the rental housing market and population shifts from southernf to northern Michigan, say they are overflowing with ideas. "It's hard to get all the ideas for. projects down on paper," said Sandra Newman, senior study director for the program. "In this field, (urban development) there is much more that is not known than is known." URBAN DEVELOPMENTAL researchers provide information that can be used by policy makers in urban and environmental decisions. "We also want these policy-makers to under- stand the implications of what they've done after they've done it," said Program Director Robert Marans. A recent example of the program's second purpose is Marans' recently completed survey about the Ann Arbor Federal Building. Marans used telephone samples of community residens and written questionnaires given to employees working in the building to see whether the structure, recipient of a design award by the Detroit chapter of the American In- stitute of Architects, is a pleasant place to look at and work in. r Marans' findings indicated that "people just don't like the building esthetically," he said in a recent Detroit News interview. "Working in it is terrible. Compared with national data (on how other employees like their working conditions), this building is terrible." BUILDINGS ARE ONLY one aspect of the urban environment studied by Marans and his collesgues. For exam- 5 ple, Marans recently completed a study on what attracts residents to non- metropolitan areas like northern Michigan. The results showed that a major factor was the quality of the natural environment and abundance of lakes and forests. Another survey, due for completion at the end of the month, is a nationwide study looking at the reasons for and frequency of discrimination by landlords against families with children. . Funding for projects comes from the fedr over nt e n ou ide men come to measure their success in terms of power they hold over other human beings. Tamborriello called the women's movement an "incomplete revolution" saying that until men change their attitudes about themselves and other people, women will have to fight the same battles over and over again because the majority of the power structures in the world are controlled aspects of the traditional male role," by men. Tamborriello said, citing the fact that Organizations such as MALE and men often die at a younger age than MAN for ERA help men deal with women because of the extreme sexuality, divorce, and child care.
