points were counted, Texas-El Paso
had successfully defended their
national championship with a total of 69

points. The meet runner-up was UCLA
with 46 points, Florida State was third
with 38 and Southern California fourth
with 36.
MICHIGAN'S competitors finished in
a tie for 41st place, earning four points
in the meet, which scored competitors
10-8-6-4-2-1 for the top six places.
The top Michigan performance came
from long jumper James Ross, whose
jump of 26-1 was good for fifth place
in the meet. The jump set a Michigan
school record, but was over 15 inches
short of the winning jump of 27-4/a by
Carl Lewis of Houston.
Ross' leap broke the oldest record on 1
the Michigan track books. The previous
record-holder was Howard Hubbard
whose jump of 25' 101/2" in 1925 was the
previous standard.
TWO OTHER Michigan track recor-
ds fell in Austin. The first came when
Butch Woolfolk was clocked at 20.60 in
the quarterfinals of the 200-meter dash.
Woolfolk qualified for the finals with a
run of 20.63 in the semis, and he
proceeded to place sixth in the finals of
the event with a 20.66.
The winning time in the 200 came
from Michael Roberson of Florida
State, who swept to a time of 29.96
seconds.
The other school record was turned in
by Dan Heikkinen in the finals of the
300-meter steeplechase. Heikkinen
finished with a time of 8:28.91, also good
for sixth place. Wisconsin archrival
Randy Jackson won the event, who
completed the distance in a time of
8:22.81.
