Arkansas tourist bus crashes, 20 killed JASPER, Ark. (UPI)-A chartered bus carrying elderly vacationers on a tour of the Ozark Mountains went out of con- trol on a treacherous highway yesterday and hurtled through trees down a steep slope, killing 20 persons and injuring 13 others. The bus was believed to be exceeding the suggested speed limit on a two-mile downgrade. Most of the victims were women. "THERE WAS DEBRIS all over the highway. Suitcases, clothes and people," said Newton County Sheriff Ray Watkins. "Several bodies were lying on the highway." Only two of the injured, who ranged in age from 56 to 76, The Michigan Daily-Friday, June 6, 1980-Page 7 were in serious condition. But Sgt. Jim Thomas of the state police said even those able to talk were experiencing "ex- treme trauma" and could not help authorities piece together the cause of the accident. Frank Wise, administrator of Boone County Memorial Hospital in Harrison, about 20 miles north of Jasper, said many of the injured could not even give their names when they arrived at the hospital. Watkins said the carnage was the worst he'd seen and "I've worked some pretty bad truck wrecks up there. For trucks, that stretch is very common for accidents. It's about two miles down from the top, and brakes get hot if you don't gear it down or don't know how to gear it down." The MOVIE MUSICAL EVENT of the 80's ! presents AN-;ter ?
