The Michigan Daily-Thursday, June 5, 1980-Page 15 SPOR TS OF T HE DAILY 'M' sends 7 tracksters to NCAA's BY JON MORELAND Coach Jack Harvey and seven mem- bers of the Michigan men's track team begin competition today in the NCAA outdoor track -championships held on the campus of the University of Texas through Saturday. The Big Ten champion Michigan trackers are represented by long jum- pers James Ross and James Henry, high jumper Mike Lattany, sprinter Butch Woolfolk, hurdler Gary Hicks, and distance runners Dan Heikkinen and Dave Lewis. These seven competitors provided the nucleus that led Michigan to an up- set victory over second-place Indiana in the Big Ten meet two weeks ago in Champaign, Illinois. Harvey was especially impressed by the perfor- mance put on by Heikkinen in winning the 10,000-meter, finishing second in the 3000-meter steeplechase, and nabbing a third in the 5000-meter. "It was fantastic that he placed 1-2-3 in those three races in a span of 18 hours," raved the coach about his senior tri-captain. "Nobody ever per- formed like that in a Big Ten meet before." The long jumpers' performances in Wilcox whips DETROIT (AP) - Detroit's John Wockenfuss belted a disputed three-run homer to back Milt Wilcox's five-hit pitching last night as the Tigers defeated the Seattle Mariners, 8-2. Wockenfuss lined a two-out drive into the lower left field seats in the Detroit fifth for his sixth home run of the season with Al Cowens and Steve Kemp aboard. Third base umpire Nick Bremigan signaled the ball passed in- side the foul pole, but Seattle left fielder Dan Meyer immediately protested it was foul. Mariner manager Darrell Johnson argued heatedly with Bremigan before the umpire ejected him from the game. In the Detroit fourth, Wockenfuss lined a two-out single, and Mariners starter and loser Floyd Bannister, 3-5, walked Jim Lentine and hit Kirk Gibson with a pitch to load the bases before Tom Brookens singled to drive in Wockenfuss and Lentine. Brewers 3, Orioles 2 BALTIMORE (AP) - Robin Yount's suicide squeeze in the eighth inning scored Paul Molitor from third base to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 3-2 vic- tory over the Baltimore Orioles last night. Molitor drew a one-out walk in the eighth from Orioles starter Mike Flanagan, 5-4, who allowed only six hits despite the loss. Flanagan trapped Molitor in a pickoff play, but he went to third when Orioles first baseman Eddie Murray threw the ball into left field trying to get Molitor at second. With ,Molitor running on the pitch, the Big Ten's were almost as im- pressive as Heikkinen's. Ross and Henry's 1-2 finish in that event thrust the Wolverines to an early lead in the _meet which they never relinquished. "We had to get off to a lead Friday night," commented Harvey,"The long jumpers really came through for us." The next day Woolfolk came up with a great performance that landed him in Austin. After finishinga close second in the 100-meter dash, he iced Michigan's team victory with a first-place finish in the 200-meter. "What can you say about Butch?" in- quired Harvey. "He hadn't run an open 200 all year, and he comes in here, wins - the race, and qualifies for the nationals." The other three performers failed to win their events, but turned in perfor- mances impressive enough to qualify for the NCAA. Lewis placed second in the 10,000 to Heikkinen, Hicks came in second to In- diana's Nate Lundy in the 400-meter hurdles with a time well under the qualifying standard, and Lattany had qualified for the NCAA meet via a previous performance. Michigan is not among the favorites 5-hitter Seattle in the NCAA meet; that role is reserved for the Southern Cal's, the UCLA's, and the Texas-El Paso's. But the seven Wolverines in Austin today are a for- midable seven. Borg in semis PARIS (AP) - Bjorn Borg and Harold Solomon won their quarterfinal. matches in the French Open Tennis Championships at the Roland Garros Stadium yesterday. Borg played near-perfect tennis in beating Corrado Barazzutti of Italy 6-0, 6-3, 6-3. Solomon overcame Guillermo Vilas of Argentina, recently crowned Italian Open champion, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6, 7-5. Borg and Solomon will meet in the semifinals. The other semifinal is bet- ween two Americans, Jimmy Connors and Vitas Gerulaitis. Borg is defending his title and is favored to win the first prize of $53,000. Daly, an aide to 76ers Coach Billy Cunningham for three years, will discuss his expiring contract soon with general manager Pat Williams, a spokesman for the NBA team said. California eliminates,, top-ranked Miami By JON WELLS Specialto theDaily OMAHA, Neb.-Two Miami errors on Lyle Brackenridge's ground ball in the last of the ninthinning brought home the winning run last night, as California eliminated the No. 1-ranked Hurricanes, 4-3, in the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium.
