CARTER DECLARES COUNTY FEDERAL DISASTER AREA
Nebraska twisters kill 4

From AP and UPI
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - A temporary morgue
was set up at a shopping center yesterday as rescue
workers searched for more bodies in the wreckage of
more than 600 homes and businesses destroyed by
tornadoes in Nebraska's third largest city.
The confirmed death toll in the Tuesday night
storm that leveled much of the city climbed to four
last night when Deputy Hall County Attorney P.
Stephen Potter pronounced a 17-year-old girl dead.
HE SAID THE girl's body had been blown three-
quarters of a block from the trailer'home where she
was staying when the twisters-hit.
"Nobody really knows how many deaths there
are," said Gov. Charles Thone after inspecting the
devastation by helicopter.
Officials say that in addition to the dead, 134 were
injured and many were unaccounted for. Potter ap-
pealed to friends and relatives of those missing to ad-
vise authorities of their whereabouts at the time of

the storm in hopes it would allow rescuers to "narrow
the scope a little."
THE FEDERAL EMERGENCY Management
Agency also revised its assessment of property
damage upwards last night. The agency said that 513
homes, up from an earlier estimate of 250, were
destroyed and 415 residences were damaged.
The agency also said 60 businesses were destroyed
and 15 were damaged. The devastation was concen-
trated in a 150-square-block area of this central
Nebraska city of 40,000.
President Carter late last night declared Hall
County a federal disaster area.
"There were something like seven tornadoes boun-
cing all over the city of Grand Island last night," said
Howard Maxon, acting Civil Defense director.
THE TWISTERS SMASHED homes, apartments,
hotels, and businesses, tossed around cars and
trucks, and ripped out power poles and trees in a 100-
block area. Electricity, natural gas, water, and
sewage lines were cut to most areas of the city. a
The twisters hit only hours after several others

struck Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, and
Maryland, leaving at least 120 people injured and one
motorist dead.
Tow-headed grade-schooler Duane Stout had the
words for the churning black cloud that reduced his
family's home to splinters: "It was scary."
LIKE THOUSANDS of other families in this city on
the Nebraska flatlands, the Stouts ran for cover
Tuesday night as the tornadoes battered Grand
Island from three sides.
For more than two hours, the 40,000 residents of the
central Nebraska community sought cover in
basements, neighbors' homes, and storm cellars.
Then, many could only listen as funnel' clouds
whirled around their homes and smashed them to the
ground, leaving houses in grotesque piles of lumber.
"I've never seen anything like it," said Danford
Stout, a 49-year-old machinist. "You know, I ain'4
much of a church goer, but I still believe in the good
Lord and I prayed when we were down in that
basement."
