Kennedy campaigns
despite sure Carter
Dem. convention win

Although President Carter is certain
to lock up the Democratic presidential
nomination in today's final primaries of
1980, Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.),
barnstormed across the country on
election eve as if the race were wide
open. ,
Carter remained at the White House,
assured of picking up the delegates he
needs today to reach the 1,666 required
for the nomination. Kennedy cam-
paigned nonstop in New Jersey,
California and Ohio - today's three
biggest primary states.
ON THE Republican side, Ronald
Reagan, who ran out of opponents a week
ago, had appeareances in three cities in
his home state of California, and looked
forward to a victory party in Los
Angeles tonight.
The biggest and final day of the
primary season has 696 Democratic
and 418 Republican delegates at stake
as Rhode Island, West Virginia, South
Dakota, New Mexico and Montana also
hold primaries for both parties, and
Mississippi has Republican-only
balloting.

Even if he lost all eight primaries - a
most unlikely result - Carter would
certainly get the delegates needed to
wrap up the nomination because they
are awarded on a proportional basis.
KENNEDY'S HOPE in the last round
of primaries is to deal Carter a series of
major defeats, thus demonstrating that
the president is losing public support.
Democratic convention delegates
might then reconsider their commit-
ment to nominate Carter for a second
term.
The Massachusetts senator rejected
Carter's offer to sit down and discuss
their differences on issues and reach an
accommodation on the party platform.
Kennedy told reporters Sunday he
would appear before the party platform
committee later this month to present
his case in person.
Among the big states, Kennedy is
regarded as having a strong chance of
carrying California and New Jersey.
But there is no way the senator could
prevent Carter from picking up far
more than 82 delegates.
