Page 2-Thursday, May 29, 1980-The Michigan Daily Teamsters re-vote in officer elections DETROIT (UPI) - Officials began tabulating ballots yesterday in an elec- tion that will tell the Teamster dissident movement whether it can buck the system in the showcase local of the nation's largest labor union., Members of Teamsters Local 299 - home local of missing ex-union boss Jimmy Hoffa and current International President Frank Fitzsimmons - are voting for seven officers, including president and vice president.. ABOUT 58 per cent of the nearly 13,000-mail ballots sent out May 5 were returned by yesterday's deadline. Results - tabulated by a Detroit ac- counting firm - were expected within 48 hours. The voting, being supervised by U.S. Labor Department observers, is a court-ordered rerun of a 1977 election challenged by dissidents on grounds-of federal labor law violations by the in- cumbents' campaign. In that earlier election, local president Robert Lins, 55, a local of- ficial since 1968 and an associate of both Hoffa and Fitzsimmons, was re-elected by a slim 244 votes over reformer Peter Karagozian. Keeping the University of Michigan informed for over 90 years Texas or bust Some people will do almost anything to get to Texas, it seems. Consider the case of an unidentified man who walked into Carson Bridge's pawnshop in West Plains, Mo. last week and hocked tools, jewelry and a gun to buy enough gas to get to the Lone Star state, but it wasn't enough. Without batting an eye, the man opened his mouth and pointed to two gold crowns. *What are they worth, he asked. "I told him they'd probably bring about $30, but I wasn't going to pull his teeth, for heaven's sake," Bridge said Tuesday. The man left and returned a short time later, a new pair of pliers and a small box in his hand. The man had pulled the crowns after buying new pliers because "he didn't want to put the dirty pliers in his mouth. He said it didn't hurt, just felt kind of funny," Bridge said. "If I had known he was that desperate, I'd have directed him somewhere to get help." Grads: Casinos want you The government has an offbeat tip for graduates looking for permanent jobs: Try your luck working in a gambling casino. Gambling hall attendants top a new Labor Department list of hard-to-fill occupations open to young job-seekers. The category includes such jobs as dealers, card players and gambling room monitors, and the pay can be quite good in some cases. A card room manager, for example, can earn $14.35 to $16.42 per hour. Job- seekers with college or other post-high school training might also do well to search for openings as accountants, nurses, administrative assistants and electronic technicians, according to the department. On the outside The wizards at the Weather Bureau forecast partly cloudy skies today with a chance of thundershowers throughout the day. The high temperature should reach into the low to mid 80s. 17 Happenings FILMS Public Health-Noontime film fest, About Sex: A Three Letter Word for Love, 12:10 p.m., Aud., SPH II.
