The Michigan Daily-ThursdayMa, 1980-Page 23 SpSrts PARSONS, GUTHRIE HAVE TROUBLE ATINDY, Rutherford INDIANAPOLIS (AP)-Johnny Rutherford remained hot, Johnny Par- son car caught fire and Janet Guthrie spent a good part of the day cooling her heels yesterday as practice continued for the 64th running of the Indianapolis 500 auto race Memorial Day weekend. As he had on the two previous days, Rutherford turned in the top practice speed of the day with a lap at 191.002. This time, however, it was in the backup car of Jim Hall's Chaparral Racing team, not the racer with which he won the Ontario Twin 200. Rutherford was clocked at 191.449 mph Tuesday and 192.4 Monday. Parsons' Lightning-Cosworth caught fire when its engine blew during a prac- tice lap. The incident began on turn two and Parsons parked the flaming racerc turn three, sitting calmly in it until t fire crews arrived. Parsons' fire was the first of fo emergency incidents on the track. Three separate cars spun out and h the wall in less than 90 minutes. Rook Frank Weiss spun out and hit the wa combing out of turn four. Sheldon Ki ser's car hit the wall on turn one an another rookie, Dennis Firestone, we onto the grass on the inside befo slamming into the outside wall. On Weiss was injured, suffering a brokf ankle and a broken knee. Do a Tree a Favor: Recycle Your Daily OAKLAND (AP)-Cleveland's Mike Hargrove extended his hitting streak to 18 consecutive games with a two-run single in the sixth inning and- Rick Waits pitched a four-hitter to give the Indians a 2-1 victory over the Oakland A's yesterday. Waits, 2-3, allowed only an unearned run, on first baseman Hargrove's throwing error in the third. Oakland starter Brian Kingman, 2-4, did not give up a hit until the fifth, when Gary Alexander blooped a single to right field. But the Indians got three straight hits with one out in the sixth. JORGE ORTA got an infield single, Duane Kuiper doubled to left and Hargrove lined his game-winning single to right. Rob Picciolo led off the A's third with a single and Dave McKay followed with a sacrifice bunt. Picciolo rounded second and headed for third base, which the Indians left uncovered on the play, and Hargrove's throw to third went over the glove of catcher Ron Hassey, who tried to cover the bag. Hargrove has driven in 18 runs during his hitting streak and 19 for the season. Madlock was fined $5,000 and suspended 15 days after an argument with umpire Jerry Crawford during a Pirate-Montreal game last week. MARVIN MILLER, executive director of the players assocition, disclosed the hearing and questioned the punishment which, he said, Feeney imposed on the basis only of the umpires' testimony. "He questioned no players on either the Pittsburgh or Montreal teams," Miller said. "Be made his decision and nownhe will be reviewing his own action." The hearing was called because the umpiring team involved will be passing through New York Thursday. Madlock is not expected to be present. "This is due process, Feeney-style," said Miller. In Pittsburgh, the Pirates announced that Madlock will attend the hearing along with his attorney, Steve Greenberg, Pirates manager Chuck Tanner and Harding "Pete" Peterson, the club's executive vice president. THE PIRATES are not scheduled today. Miller had charged that the hearing was called for the umpires' convenience since they were passing through New York. Kemp game-winner NEW YORK (AP)-Steve Kemp of the Detroit Tigers has taken the American League lead in game- winning runs batted in, a new statistic being introduced this spring. Kemp has been credited With five game-winning RBIs so far this season. Roy Howell of Toronto is second with four, and 11 players are tied with three each. According to rulesradopted this season, a player is credited with a game-winning RBI when he drives in a run which puts his team ahead to stay, regardless of the game's final score.
