'U' alumnus new MSU trustee

By DOUG FELTNER
The man who managed to have the
words "Go Blue" and "Beat OSU"
surreptitiously printed in small type on
the official Michigan state highway
map was appointed Tuesday by Gov.
William Milliken to fill a vacancy on the
Michigan State University Board of
Trustees.
Peter Fletlcher, former chairman of
the State Highway Commission and
self-described "avid alumnus" of the
Unviersity said yesterday he hoped to
be of some assistance in guiding MSU
and described the trustee job as "an
important responsibility to the people
of the state."
THE 1954 UNIVERSITY graduate
received an A.B. in political science
and was designated an Angell Scholar
during his junior and senior years.
Fletcher's support for the University
is well-known. In addition to the high-
way map coup, Fletcher said he faith-
fully wears a maize and blue scarf
when the weather is cold.
Although he has season tickets to
Univesity football games, Fletcher
stated that "gridiron loyalties are a
rather superficial aspect of the appoin-
tment.

been ranked repeatedly as one of the

most important. universities in the
world," Fletcher stated. "That doesn't
mean we can't have two top-flight
universities in the state," he added.
Fletcher, a 48-year-old bachelor, is
finishing his fifth year as Republican
national committeeman from
Michigan. His appointment brings the
number of Republicans on the board to
three, while five Democrats remain.
Fletcher's appointed has created

,some controversy in the capitol, both
because of Fletcher's loyalty to the
University and because of his long-
standing friendship with fellow
Republican Milliken.
YESTERDAY, MILLIKEN defended
the appointment, revealing that he had
first offered the job to a Democrat,
former Treasury Secretary Michael
Blumenthal.
Fletcher aid that he was not aware of

any charges from the media or state
Democrats that his appointment was a
political favor.
"When I served before, with the State
Highway Commission, there was no
undue criticism that I was a zealous
partisan," Fletcher said. "Give me a
chance. The governor has my signed,
undated resignation. If he feels it is
necessary, he can fill it out.
