The Poughkeepsie, N.Y. college said Tuesday that the seniors will hear no main speaker during commencement Sunday because the scheduled speaker-Buckley-had withdrawn after learning of student protests. A petition objecting to his selection was signed by 301 of 555 seniors, and the student newspaper called Buckley's views offensive "to women, to minorities, to pacifists, and, in short, to a presumable majority of Vassar students." Buckley, editor of the conservative National Review, withdrew Monday in a letter to Vassar President Virginia Smith, dubbing Vassar students "a fearfullyill-nformed body" and commenting "nowhere have I encountered that blend of ferocious illiteracy achieved by the young men and women of Vassar." Sticks and stones can break Vassar students' bones, Mr. Buckley .. .F Sex for sale at national convention Representatives of prostitutes' groups said yesterday that despite a police crackdown, sex will be for sale during the Democratic National Convention this summer and prices will be up to 40 per cent higher. The representatives also said prostitutes would follow Republicans to their July 14-18 convention in Detroit. Iris De La Cruz, head of the 2000-member Prostitutes of New York, said "during the convention women will not stop hustling, no matter how many police are arresting them. There's an expression on the street-put a little shade to it. You go undercover. You become a little more wary. You ask more questions. But you don't stop." De La Cruz also said prostitutes would charge perhaps 40 per cent more for their services during the conventions, and called New York Mayor Edward Koch's aim of cracking down on prostitution "a pathological obsession."
