Daily-Tuesday, May 20, 1980-Page 15 Jetfiners have near Collision at O'Hare CHICAGO (AP) - Two jetliners carrying 261 persons came within about 100 feet of colliding at O'Hare Inter- national Airport yesterday when a pilot who was landing veered off his final ap- proach to avoid hitting a jet taxiing for takeoff on an intersecting-runway, of- ficials said The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the "near miss," and said witnesses had reported seeing an American Airlines Boeing 727 pass just 100 feet over a Braniff International Boeing 727, spokesman Neal Callahan said. "It was uncomfortably close and a dangerous situation," an American spokesman said. 'Callahan said he would not know ,t positively how close the planes came or the cause of the incident until the crews are interviewed and cockpit tapes heard. &ATE + L1T7r.R RONALD REAGIN, PLACING great emphasis on the ethnic vote in two days of campaigning in the Midwest, speaks to a group attending the Slovak festival in downtown Detroit's Hart Plaza Sunday. Bush makes election- eve sweep for votes 5oMETIAHNG T OFF MP EVERYONE? ' ".,#;. a: r ,x::,::.' r:. DETROIT (UPI)-George Bush made a frantic election-eve sweep of Michigan yesterday in search of the crossover votes he needs to prevent Ronald Reagan from clinching the Republican presidential nomination today. It was unlikely Reagan, who is given a slight edge hee, would get enough delegates to put him over the top in the state where he expects to be nominated July 16. BUT A GOOD showing in Michigan could enable him to seize the nomination in Oregon, where he is favored to win a majority of that state's 29 Republican delegates today. In the latest UPI delegate count, Reagan is 59 delegates shy of the 998 he needs to clinch the nomination. Despite good weather, a slim voter turnout-23 per cent, or 1.2 million-was forecast. A light turnout is expected to benefit Reagan. A RECENT REAGAN poll showed his 10 percentage-point lead dwindling amid a barrage of Bush radio adver- tisements. Bush is hoping for a repeat of 1976, when Reagan's unsuccqssful drive for the nomination lost momentum in Michigan. Reagan drew only 35 per cent of the vote against native son Gerald Ford, thanks to an intense, last- minute campaign by party progressives who this time are working for Bush. The Michigan delegates will be ap- portioned to the candidates based on their percentage of the statewide raw vote total. "I THINK I'M going to win in Michigan," Bush said yesterday. "I have the same feeling I had when we won in Pennsylvania and when we came so close in Texas." But the former U.N. ambassador wasn't as confident of his prospects in Oregon. "I DON'T FEEL as secure about that," he said. "I was only there a day- and-a-half. It's a state where he has a lot of strength in the southern part." Bush spent four straight days in his final Michigan effort-one which, he concedes, is crucial to his survival in the campaign. He campaigned in Detroit, Lansing, Saginaw and Muskegon on the final day of the Michigan campaign. Reagan left for Oregon after an early morning news conference in Dearborn. Democrats have no meaningful primary of their own. California Gov. Jerry Brown and former U.S. Labor Party head Lyndon LaRouche are the only two names on the non-binding Democrataic ballot, and the two Republican candidates only appealed for cross-over votes. .domovs oV NT A TfMAfT/ E E*M Yo !I ©1980 BRIGHTON PRODUCTIONS, INC.
