writing in
new book
by profs

The Michigan Do
(Continued from Page 9)
many professors are forced to give
multiple-choice tests instead. His hope
is that professors will not have to forego
assigning term-papers, and that such a
book will improve the quality of un-
dergraduate writing.
"It is important that a student write
at his or her level," Officer commen-
ted. "Everyone's an expert at his or her
level. Students can write about
somethin that relates to their own ex-
perience.
ONE PROBLEM, Officer said he
found, is that students too often try to
use complicated language. "Many
professors don't like 'hi-falutin'
language. Students shouldn't be afraid

to use simple language.
Although Officer acknowledged
receiving many excellent papers over
the years, one stands out in his mind.
He recalls, "It was titled 'An Analysis
of Demand for Illicit Marijuana in a
University Community' and was writ-
ten in 1971, when attitudes were not as
liberal as they are now. But by clever
writing, the actual places and incidents
were never exposed."
At present, it is not known which Ann
Arbor bookstores will carry the book or
how soon, but for those interested it can
be obtained for $2.45 from the Division
of Research in the Graduate School of
Business Administration at MSU.
